For now I'm experimenting with some input from THEMES.md. It's still unspecified what I initially wanted to get rid of: the bright (white) glow around the carousel bar.

I have changed my carousel bar into a darker colour and a bright glow seems a bit out of place for my new theme...

I'm looking at other themes that don't feature this but it doesn't seem to be within the carousel element (or anywhere else for that matter).

Unlike videos, it's a bit more confusing for me since I mostly see radical changes in other themes and my attempts to copy parts which I assume that change something particular, give unwanted results.

That's the reason I'm asking for some guidance regarding the carousel bar. Maybe someone could contribute in that part of the wiki? It will sure help many users.

To answer the topic's title:

The fear of the unknown and the convenience that satisfies their laziness.

I would like to make clear that I don't want to offend anyone who has ever used a pre-made set. Truth be told, for me those are the only excuses not to make it yourself.

Advanced troubleshooting aside, the main setup is extremely easy for literally any person with basic computing skills.

And then, there are people who use the excuse "I don't have any free time". I respect that but there are products for that need out there such as the Nintendo classic minis.

It appears that advanced theming documentation for ES has been incomplete for a while.

I would like to see some documentation regarding system carousel, its theming capabilities and hardcoded limitations.

Could anyone please expand that article or provide information here? The video support section is also empty but at least it's pretty straightforward by checking carbon's code.

I just removed mine with this method. It felt like real life photoshop! After some rubbing, the logo is gone but the plastic is untouched, no scratches!

I also cleared the buttons and logo off my black "NES case", removed the red stripe and now it looks really sleek :)

I don't know how to help but I would recommend that you try lr-vice. It's considered experimental but it works fine for me and benefits from RetroArch's control and shader goodness.

@matchaman I think the same rules for movies apply to games. You can watch a dvd you bought together with some friends in your home. But you are not allowed to show the movie to people in a public place.
Also it seems like you want to make money of it indirectly by only allowing customers to play.

I think there's a general license for movies and audio to be played in a public place (not a specific one for each movie or artist) but I'm very unsure about games, especially in the EU.

I don't plan to make money off of it, the reason I wouldn't allow non-customers to play is that people who would come just to play would be generally troublemakers here in Athens (Greece).

For example, a friend had a free to use jukebox in his bar and people visited just to mess it up and kept vandalising it every time. Ever since he asked the waiters to allow only customers, the jukebox has been remaining in good condition.

I have the exact same question but for "free to play" instead. I plan to open a vintage-themed cafe and have a cabinet with my RetroPie setup (MAME & consoles) for everyone to play. Could that be illegal in some way?

I mean, it could be seen as a means to attract customers but personally I just want to give more of a retro look but without charging anything extra. My only restriction would be that only customers should be allowed to play (not random visitors).

I'm using a CRT TV in my office room above my PC monitor and when I game in the living room I connect it via HDMI, so I keep swapping composite and HDMI.

For now I'll probably keep switching between local and HDMI but both had been very convenient until Stretch and the afore issues.

The main problem is that I mostly use ES Kiosk mode because friends and relatives sometimes mess up my collections. Right now I'm between ALSA (and those slight hiccups) and manual switching each time.

Update: Oh dear... ALSA:HW:0,0 fixed it BUT causes some slight input lag within the menus. I initially thought it's my imagination or due to the large amount of videos and art. Then I played around and used localinstead of ALSA:HW:0,0and the (slight) delay was gone!

However, that made videos stay silent in HDMI so it's not a real fix. Later today I'll make a new fully updated Jessie build again and check performance between both, local and ALSA:HW:0,0.
