@SgtJimmyRustles I might have to try that one out. One thing I have found is I much prefer shumps that allow you to hold the trigger in. Games like 1942 kill my thumb.

Oh yeah, you won't have that problem there. Just hold a key down and move around.
Though I do have, on my horipad controller, a turbo button so that could help you.

@SgtJimmyRustles It has been listed already, but it can't hurt to give Raptor some extra attention. :-) To me this game got everything right..especially the music is excellent.

@quicksilver Yeah autofire is a huge advantage. In some emulators you can alter the controls and turn on "autofire".

@SgtJimmyRustles It seems that Raptor allows you to shoot the enemy bullets to destroy them. That seems like a fairly easy way to rush headlong into the fray. This got me thinking... I guess I'd classify shooters into three difficulty categories in this respect.

            1. Easy - You can shoot the enemy bullets to destroy them.

            2. Medium - The enemy bullets are destroyed when the enemy that fired them is destroyed.

            3. Hard - The enemy bullets are never destroyed.

@IanDaemon I guess what you think you're seeing is actually the aircraft taking damage. You cant destoy enemy bullets in Raptor by shooting at them. But you can get hit untill your energy bar is depleted.

One advice for anyone giving Raptor a try: Use the Dos setup option to set your gamepad. Uptill now I let Dos think I was using a keyboard (I've used the mapper to assign keyboard keys to my controller; amongst others the arrow keys to my left thumbstick). But flying diagonally was incredibly hard. After I used the setup option to set control type to Joystick I was flying diagonally with ease. :-)

That's honestly something we need, dosbox controller configs for retropie without having to use dosbox itself.

@SgtJimmyRustles there is lr-dosbox but it's too slow to be useful on a pi. Even on my overclocked pi3b+ it chugged pretty bad on most games.

@quicksilver I installed Cyvern but it's often at around 50fps on lr-fbalpha, even with the speedhacks. Am I missing something, or what are you using to play it?

EDIT: managed to get the missing files to run it on AdvMame and it runs like a charm there. Thanks for the tip!

@pjft Im using mame2003. I am overclocked but didn't really notice any slowdown unless there was a ton of bullets on the screen. And even then the game was very playable for me. I'll check exact fps when next I'm on my pi. The game itself is extremely hard, but it's making me a better shump player now that I have played it through 4-5 times. I've gone back to play a few other shumps and they feel like a cake walk compared to this game 😂

@pjft I have to say I much prefer the blue "Cyvern" because of it's wide spread shots and chain lightning alt attack. Great for crowd control. Green is good for concentrated fire, not a big fan of the red one though.

@quicksilver I'll give it a shot, thanks! Only played the red one briefly to see how the game went.

AdvMame works well for it so I'm sticking with it. Thanks for the tip and a happy Saturday!
