I was thinking about both pitfalls for the 2600 or msx. Other games you should let him play are the Ninja Gaiden games for Nes and Mastersystem :D

Any of the SNES 'Super' Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back was very very hard, Smash TV Could be tricky, sure that was just all out 'Total Carnage', I recall firing up some of the good old Shooters, something like 'Flying Shark' I failed badly despite loads of credits pumping in.

Oh, Mike Tysons Punch Out on the NES...

Pretty much anything before we got mid level checkpoints :D I'm not the greatest at FPS, but beat one of the CODS on Veteran on the 360 in under 14 hours!

I think Batman Returns on the Atari Lynx is still possibly the hardest game I've ever played. Couldn't tell you what the game is like past level 2

@bubs866 Thank goodness for save states now! :D They are the only reason I get to enjoy certain levels on some games.

Megaman (all of them, no matter platform)
              The Terminator (Sega Genesis)
and my list could go on to the eternity...

The first level of that game is really the only one worth playing anyway. In my opinion, it's one of the most inventive you'll find throughout the entire NES library. However, it's almost as if the developers gave up moving forward, as every other level and sequel is your basic shovelware concept for generic platformers of collecting items and beating an end boss. I would have loved to see a whole game patterned after that first stage.

Any of those are always a challenge. Have you been able to beat 'Makaimura for WonderSwan' yet?

Load up Serious Sam on insane setting and then get out of the room.

@mediamogul I've never beaten any Makaimura game. They're so fun, but I am awful at them.

Little Nemo: The Dream Master (NES) and I believe there is an arcade variant just named Nemo.

Also the original Contra (NES) without the infamous Konami Code.

Oh yeah...don't forget Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (or also known as Super Mario Brothers 2 in Japan).

Hey @mediamogul ! All this month I have been focused on completing Mafia 3 on PC 100% with all the DLCs. On my RPi, my son loves Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man. I'm really not very good at it but I really like the Ms. Pac-Man / Galaga combo arcade because you can just continue where you died instead of starting all over at the beginning lol.

Your son's got great taste. I'm not all that great at the Pac-games myself. Playing 'Jr. Pac-Man' has helped a lot, as the lack of tunnels forces you to be hyper-aware of your surroundings and possible escape routes. The tactics carry over to the other games, but it's really become my favorite of the series anyway, so I usually just play that.
