What are your expectations for the pi 5?

@piboy they think it might have memory on the board instead of an SD card. I don’t think that will happen because people like the fact you can give the pi more memory by swapping SD cards

@unknown You are confusing memory (RAM) with storage (mSDCard/USB). The Pi (just as other SOC models) always had the memory soldered on the board and it is not upgradeable, like on a PC.

I'm expecting something along the lines of an A76 CPU with a GPU that is boosted a little but much like the GPU in the Pi4*. With that in mind I would imagine that Gamecube and Wii will be the highest spec machine it will be capable of.

I also wonder * tinfoil hat firmly on looking through long distance glasses * if Xbox emulation will come to surpass PS2 emulation, in terms of what can be run on the lowest spec machines. Between PSP, Gamecube and Xbox there may only be a few titles that people really need a PS2 to run.

I certainly expect N64, PSP and DS emulation to become a much more stable experience for almost all of their titles.

We may start to see the end of SD cards and the beginning of M2 SSDs, small capacity ones are getting cheaper all the time, sometimes rivalling Micros SD prices, while offering more stable storage and (potentially) faster access. If Wii emulation does become commonplace on the Pi it will be interesting to see what, if anything, happens with integrating the Wii mote and accessories.

*pure speculation of course, maybe more maybe less.

@piboy I've emulated PS2 on the Pi4, but it has nothing to do with Retropie, you actually need to install Win 10 ARM which is a feat in and of itself. Performance of PCSX2 is absolute crap as you can expect, but even worse since the GPU isn't actually supported in Win 10 ARM (yet...). That being said, there are SOME games that are actually playable. KH 1 and 2, FF 10, FF 12, Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter, and Disgaea 1 and 2 to name a few.

@victimrlsh do you have any gameplay videos or tutorials? I'd like to see how Kingdom Hearts 2 runs, it's quite a surprise to hear it's playable on Pi 4.

I doubt they'll ever have builtin storage on a RPi. It's not cost effective since a lot of projects may exceed or never fully utilize the on board storage. 32 GB is fine for up to SNES/GBA emulation, but not enough for PSX or Dreamcast. People tend to want to store a whole library of stuff. And that's just one category, game emulation. Think Kodi boxes. Video libraries can be huge. Naturally having the OS builtin to something much faster than an SD card would be great, but it is just such a great way to minimize costs, I doubt it is worth it to the RPi foundation.

Better would be USB 3.1 or USB 4. Very fast for running an emulation OS, as well as a lot of the operating systems that RPi's use.

Well yeah, of course you can get it to run if you can get Windows to run on an RPi. As you said, it runs like crap. What people want is official support for the PCSX2 core on ARM. That is still long off, unless there is some project I am not familiar with. Even though, PS2 emulation is far from perfect on an x86 PC. My experience involves a number of FPS drops, occasional crashes, and plenty of mostly minor graphical errors. But hey, maybe one day when the RPI's GPU is fully supported on Windows...someday...

@piboy It appears that at best PS2 will be like N64 on pi 3 . Some games work but most don’t.

@unknown Speed and graphical errors are interchangeable here. If you use the PCSX2 speed hacks to try and get it to run faster, you get more graphic glitches, but speed is the primary issue. Getting through the cutscenes on FF 10 is a grind, but the battles aren't too bad.

I was not a big fan of the HDMI micro for the current Pi 4 but maybe they can offer variations of it with a regular HDMI port instead. I don't know about you guys but its not just about CPU/GPU power but improving stability and functionality. There was a issue at launch with the whole USB power port with the Pi 4. Wither it was Lakka OS or Retropie there is something to be desired from the video out not working at times and needing some configuration.

Don't discount Pine64's SBC hardware as well, People are getting Retroarch running on their open-source Linux Phones.

As for the Pi 5 I hope it is not much bigger than what it is, I like it's current and portable size, very travel friendly.
