Suggestions for NES rom hacks?
-
DISCLAIMER: I'm not asking for roms, or where to get them. I'm just asking for input on good hacks!!!!
Hey guys,
I'm looking for some great rom hacks. Not just decent ones or "passable" stuff that would just sit on the Pi for a decade and never get played. I'm talking about the top shelf stuff that really improves upon the original games.
I was really excited to find Metroid: Rogue Dawn earlier today and I can't wait to try it out.
The reviews for this game are some of the best I've ever seen for any translation or hack before.
Anybody know of any other game hacks that might live up to this standard on the NES?

I have some NES in my thread on Hacks and Homebrews - but they are mostly improvement and restoration hacks. There are some good homebrews in there also:

@capeman Nice man. Some of those look pretty sweet.
Any more guys and gals?

There is a team of people that update Techmo Bowl every year with the latest teams that make it to the super bowl. I just found out about it after the last Super Bowl.
-
@hurricanefan Wow... that's pretty awesome. I'm definitely going to have to look into that.
I wonder if the team that made "Tecmo Super Coach 2010" kept updating that game. I never got around to playing it myself, but it seemed to be one of the largest and most ambitious game hacks on the NES ever at the time.

Castlevania 2 redaction makes the game playable
Mario Adventure is polished and awesome
There are also some translations of a bunch of Japanese RPG's that didn't originally get an english release. Here's a wacky snes one. Adventure of Hourai High

Castlevania 2 redaction makes the game playable
So much hate on this game ever since AVGN ripped on it lol. I loved this game and found it very playable when I was a kid. NES was just pretty cryptic about all sorts of things that literally got lost in translation. He was right about it being a game that sold Nintendo Power magazine though.
Just thinking about that game brings back cool memories that wouldn't even be possible today with the internet. I have no idea where half of the "tricks" I heard of came from outside of Nintendo Power. They just spread by word of mouth back then. Now all you'd do is go to gamefaqs and get the whole playthrough and beat Simon's Quest in a few hours with savestates.
I thought I already had this hack, but I just checked and I don't have it in my Castlevania collection. It's on my to-do list now. :)
Mario Adventure is polished and awesome
Always nice to get a recommendation on a GOOD Super Mario hack in the endless sea of mediocre garbage.

Unlike general hacks, I'm a HUGE fan of translations. I haven't made my way to SNES yet, but I do have every NES translation that had a patch over at romhacking that was in a complete status. It's nearly 300 games on that list. It's really awesome that these guys spend the time on these games to bring them to an english speaking audience.
I think the one I'm actually most excited to play is the translation of the Chinese bootleg of Final Fantasy VII.
Thanks for the suggestions.

BTW Everbody.
Metroid - Rogue Dawn is a MUST PLAY.
I've never said that about any game hack before.
I've only played about 10-15 minutes into it so I can't speak to the quality throughout, but it's an entirely new game. The graphics are awesome, there are 3 available game saves like the FDS version so no password required if you don't like save states, and best of all it features a fully working 9-square minimap in the top left corner and a much larger map when you press the Start button.
I'm really looking forward to playing this one all the way through and I highly recommend that you try it.

@meleu Sweet. Looks like it's gotten some recognition that it clearly deserves. :)
-
@used2berx Figured I'd give this a bump to see if anybody else has any good ideas for NES rom hacks .

@used2berx The Castlevania: The Holy Relics homebrew is pretty good, if you enjoyed the original, then you'll certainly like this one.
