PS1 - Shader options for Enhanced Resolution
-
Past couple days, I've been experimenting with shaders when having Enhanced Resolution on and Dithering on as well. Dithering smooths out a lot of those lightning effects, but the other side of the coin is that it also brings in those dithering dots that are visible. My aim is to improve the PS1 gaming experience, without making it too much like PC emulation, where everyone just puts everything to the max and thus, it smoothens out the whole image way too much and it looks ugly.
So far, I've tried these shaders:
Bevel.glsl
Bilateral.glsl
4xsoftSdB.glslAll of the use Scale 1x and Linear Filter.
From those, I've found out that the Bevel with Bilateral gives best results. 4xsoftSdB is a bit too smooth shader for my tastes, as it blurs the image a bit too much, but in the other hand, makes some of the 2D stuff look beautiful. Bevel sharpens and brightens up the image, but if you use that alone, it makes this strange effect to the screen, where the screen if filled with different brightness blocks, going from brighter to dimmer frim top left corner to bottom right corner. Bilateral and 4xsoftSdB smoothens out those blocks and smoothens out the dithering dots, which results nicely smooth image overall.
Couple things that pisses me off thou is that the shader settings sometimes bug out and decide not work again until you reboot the machine, and that the settings are never saved as game specific, even thou I select that, it always saves them for the whole emulator core.
Note, this topic is meant for people, who prefer of having as clear picture and gameplay as possible, without those oldschool thingys, so it's not worth to say that ''this is useless, use stock settings, etc, etc.''
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
