I just picked up a couple of these on a clearance sale. I haven't tried them yet but they look about perfect if you are trying to find a controller for both classic and PS1 games.
I agree, I bought one and I like it for SNES games.
-
Wish I had seen this earlier, I just spent £10 on an xbox 360 adapter. I think the 360 controller will be ok but I have never been a fan of the D-Pads on them.
-
@barcrest Yeah the D-Pad on the 360 controllers is absolutely TERRIBLE. I tried playing Bomberman with it, and it was useless.
-
The only 360 controllers I can use for retro games at all are the ones with the redesigned "transforming" pad. Even then, they are mediocre at best. The standard 360 controllers have issues with the downward directional button in particular turning to mush over time. I've modded so many of these controllers just to keep them working. Of course that doesn't matter much for most actual 360 games. Oddly, the wireless ones seem to wear out much faster than the wires versions. I've never figured out why because the d pad parts on both kinds are completely interchangeable.
It's a real shame as they are compatible with every consumer electronic device created by man. I'm pretty sure you could go to the space history museum, install x-input drivers on an apollo capsule, and go to town.

@beldar Since I have a 3D printer I printed out this to replace the D-Pad:

It works pretty well -
Rerez doesn't seem to like this controller:
-
@madmodder123 That's pretty cool and I'm sure it's better than the stock pad. My main problem is how tall the whole d pad structure is. It gives it a weird long pivot on top of that extra squishy rubber pad. I put a plastic disc around the pivot point and a cardstock ring around the gap in the plastic. That helps it be more responsive, but unfortunately the pieces have to be replaced fairly often.
I've pretty much given up on the 360 pads, it's a shame because I like how they feel.
-
He mainly didn't like it as a PS4 controller with everything that's missing from it. Using it for something like RetroPie seems a lot more applicable. Still, if the Dpad and thumbsticks are half as bad as he describes it would be a deal-breaker for me.
-
I've had the Hori PS4 pad for a little over 3 months now and while I do agree that the analogs are a bit stiff, I can confirm that the d-pad is fantastic. The face buttons also feel great and most of all, the pad just feels incredibly responsive. I used to play with an 8bitdo FC30 Pro but ended up despising it, mostly due to the godawful d-pad and clicky buttons.
I used a PS4 controller after that, connected wirelessly via the official PS4 USB dongle. It worked great but I was able to feel slight input lag from it. The Hori controller is now my official Pi controller of choice, as it works well for pretty much any genre of game I play (2D fighters, shoot-em-ups, etc.). I ended up liking the controller so much that I wound up buying a second one a little over a month ago.

That's good to hear. I've noticed that the videos where he trashes something always get substantially more views. So, while his opinion may come honestly, it's also in his best interest to be overly critical and hyperbolic.

After reading this thread, I went out to Fry’s today and picked up a rpi3B+ and a Hori Mini (on sale for $29!). I gotta say, I’m pretty impressed. Feels solid, the buttons have good action, the analog sticks are tight but fluid, zero lag (obviously its over USB). I just busted out a good 20 minutes on Tetris and it felt right. As for the mini name, its missing the touch panel but is still as wide as the DS4. It doesn’t have the wing hand grips as the DS4 but its not too missed as the back has a small bumps on each side that cradle well while holding. I dig it. Might just grab another while they’re on sale.
-
I might try and take it apart and see if I can replace the analog sticks with rubber ones I have for PS4 controllers.
If I can't swap em out, it is not a big loss, the controller works great as is! -
I did it!
Here are the pictures of them replaced:

I just need to add a washer/grommet so the replacements are up higher.
You can see the insides when you move the sticks, but that doesn't bother me.
Overall it will be a nice little upgrade once i'm done :) -
@madmodder123 Where did you get the replacements and how easy was it?
-
@thedatacereal
It was stupid easy, keep in mind though I still need to add a washer/grommet to adjust the height on the replacements, but that shouldn't be too hard.
You can get 10 replacements from aliexpress for 1$, but they might take forever to get shipped, i'm sure they probably have them on ebay.
I just had to take the 6 screws off, remove the back, remove 2 screws holding in the analog stick PCB, and then swap em out.
I'll make something ghetto to adjust the height when I have time, or I could 3D print a little thing out :) -
@madmodder123 Sweet, I might have to try that out. I'm in need of a quality controller that isn't too big for small hands. I love my PS3 controllers but they are starting to be inaccurate dpad wise due to age so it's becoming an issue.
-
I fixed it, just add 4x 4mm (A) washers to each of the analog stick poles (8 total). Now it works great!
Great upgrade for cheap :)
Plus now with the washers you cannot see the insides when you move the sticks :) -
I'd be interested to see some pictures of the final result if you're able.

The replacement sticks have the same size top as the originals, they are just rubberized and look like the original PS4 controller's sticks. -
Very nice.
