Questions on the Raspberry Pi 3B+ and MAME emulation under Retropie.

Hi everyone.
I have a question or two regarding MAME and the latest Raspberry Pi 3 B+. I am building a NEW bartop cabinet and want to use MAME primarily. The questions I have are...
- I want to play the 80s and 90s games mostly on the cabinet. Is the Pi 3B+ fast enough to play games like Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat and similar titles? How about the 3D fighters?
2a. I'd like to be able to use bezel artwork for vertical games so that the bezel images will help lessen the empty space to the left and right of the game screen on my horizontal monitor.
2b. I'd also like to be able to save high scores either via a highscore save file or if worse comes to worse by having automatic save states when you exit a game and automatic loading of the previous save state when launching a previously played game.
- I see there are quite a few versions of MAME that exist for the Retropie such as AdvancedMAME, MAME4all, Lr-MAME 2003, 2010, 2014, etc... which is the best version to use on the Pi 3B+ to get the above games to run properly and hopefully to gain the features as explained in 2a and 2b?
If anyone can answer these questions, I'd truly be appreciative.
Thanks,
John -
The pi b3+ handles everything up to and including the Capcom CPS-III board with excellent results. But Naomi or other 3D boards are largely beyond it. So, 2D up to the early 2000s is good, but 3D starting in the late 90s won't play well.
Mame 2003 plus has a lot of backdrop and bezel work being done on it. It's still a work in progress but currently my favorite MAME core.

@Draugr I use lr-fbalpha and mame2003-plus. If you do some searching I think someone came up late last year with a post that had a spreadsheet for which arcade games work and then which emulator each works best with. There are a few games that only work in each one. I selected about 200-250 total games for my bar top. You might want to consider using psx and Dreamcast for later arcade games that don’t run on lr-fbalpha or mame2003-plus. I use them for games like soul blade, soul calibur, nfl blitz, tekken 3, crazy taxi, street fighter ex 2, etc.
