[SCRIPT] RetroPie Convert Videos
-
@kdeman Hey, sorry for the late reply! I have the changes on the
develop
branch, which I'm currently working on. I'll release a new version withffmpeg
and some other stuff pretty soon :) -
@hiulit Thanks, I have taken this for a reason to update my own script accordingly. š

Hi there!
I've just released RetroPie Convert Videos v3.0.0! :D
Changelog
NOTE: This release may contain breaking changes!
Deprecated
forlibav-tools
ffmpeg
.
Added
- New option
--gui
to start the GUI. It lets you perform all the functions, but in a more friendly manner. Ifstandalone
is passed as a parameter, the script doesn't check if RetroPie is installed, which it does by default.
@kdeman Could you give it a try and see if you have any issues now?
@Rion I've added an option to use the script as a standalone app. Check the docs, but basically now you can execute the script like this./retropie-convert-videos.sh --gui standalone
and it will open a nice GUI and it won't check if RetroPie is installed. I don't know if that's what you meant, but there, I've done it :)EDIT:
I've updated the first post with the new documentation. -
@hiulit Thanks! This is really a big QOL improvement and speeds up the process of converting video snaps from the desktop.
-
@Rion You're welcome! Let me know if it works for you the way you thought it would work :)
-
@hiulit Excellent! thank you very much...

I just can't seem to get this to work on any of my videos. Keep running into this error for all my videos:
daphne ------ Converting -> "ace.mp4" ... (1/4) (standard_in) 1: syntax error ERROR: 'ace.mp4' has 0 frames!
This happens with every emulator. I'm using v3.0.0 and I set the scraper to
./retropie-convert-videos.sh --scraper "skyscraper"
and all my videos are in /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/<system>/media/videos/
-
@KarateInSpace I think I might know what is causing the issue :/ I'll release a new version asap.
-
I've just released RetroPie Convert Videos v3.1.0!
Changelog
Fixed
- Replaced legacy
libav-tools
() commands for the newavprobe
ffmpeg
's equivalents (ffprobe
).
@KarateInSpace Could you try it now and see if it works? :)
- Replaced legacy
-
@hiulit Yes! Working great now! Thank You!
-
@KarateInSpace glad to hear that :)
-
@hiulit I'm still using this tool. It's still very valuable. I, of course, wish the MAME videos on screenscraper.fr were consistent, but since they aren't, this script's ability to scan videos first and only select files in a particular encoding format is invaluable.
Love it, and thanks!

@roslof Wow! Thank you for the kind words, Ros :) I'm glad it's so useful to you

Hi there, this is such a great tool and thanks to all contributors!
Iām using a network share that holds all my ROMs for all my systems, however the folder names arenāt standard RetroPie folder names. In fact, many have spaces in them. RetroPie works fine as I have mounted the share and set the confige up so each system knows where to pull its ROMs from. However, the video converter wonāt convert as, for example, my NEO GEO folder is
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/SNK Neo Geo AES/
When I try to convert a specific system and set that system to āSNK Neo Geo AESā, I see a message saying āStarting video conversionā but then nothing happens.
If I use the GUI and select a system, it lists systems like this
-Nintendo
-Entertainment
-System
-SNK
-Neo
-Geo
-AES- etc...
Can I get the converter working with my folder structure that contains spaces?
Thank you again!

@AbbaTheHorse Well, it seems that you can't :P I'll have a look and see if I can fix it :)

Oh wow, thank you so much! š
-
@AbbaTheHorse :) although the best way would be if you just use dashes or underscores instead of spaces, hehe! Can't you?
-
@hiulit Hey, yes I appreciate thatās an ideal solution. Basically, Iām running the Wolfanoz 3TB build on my home server which is the source of all my games. If I change the folder names, that will stop working š¬
I fully appreciate this is quite a unique issue though.
What Iām doing though is a worthy little project, in that I have a Pi in a few different rooms that all pull ROMs from a central source on the network.
Iām just stuck on getting my arcade videos working, as the scraper has given me the wrong format videos.
I (and Iām sure everyone else who has used your tool) really appreciate your time and skill here!
Thank you again,

@AbbaTheHorse I think I got it working. I'll release a new version soon-ish. I have to test it a little bit more :)
