Some online games such as Fortnite are banning players who are using keyboard and mice on consoles (especially if they are using a device to spoof a controller when the player is actually kb/m).

As retro gamers you would think this doesn't apply here, but there are many Retroarch emulators that enable cheevos and the program code prohibits use of pauses, throttles, save states, cheats, etc. but not controller types. There are a few retro games that can be absolutely destroyed with keyboard and mouse, such as StarBlade, Star Wars, Reactor, Missile Command, most gun games, and many others.

System Config: Retropie 4.4 with full desktop, RPi 3B, 256gb SD, 5v 2.1A 5,200 mAH USB battery. EasyMSX controller mounted with Pimoroni Hyperpixel 4 (non touch). Also running 4.6 on a 4gb Pi 4 serving as my primary desktop computer now.

I was not aware of the situation with recent games so that is interesting. If an Xbox or PS4 etc. allows plugging in of keyboard and mouse to play I'm surprised this is being banned. I could see how maybe that should be a part of their matchmaking system, if possible, whereby players are grouped according to their input devices and kick someone who switches mid match.

Personally, I prefer a mouse or something like a Wii-mote greatly for FPS games. I have not tried these in retro games yet. Although in trying to do well in the arcade version of Terminator 2, I found it much easier with a mouse than a gamepad.

In my opinion, if you are doing something competitive with retro games, I think you need to have categories similar to weight classes in boxing or wrestling. Maybe compare scores or times in groups such as pure, no-save-states, original input only, free-for-all, etc. Sometimes when you play the old games as originally intended you gain an appreciation of how tough they really were.

@YFZdude That is the core of the debate, whether kbm players should be put on servers with each other instead of bans, but I can see bans for spoof devices.
