      Whenever I start a game on my RetroPi there is a little footer saying what I am playing and the controller I am using for a couple seconds.
      Anyway to turn this off?

      Just a personal preference.

        @Jiryn I'm fairly certain to disable it for all retroarch cores edit the following file: /configs/all/retroarch.cfg

        search for the line: video_font_enable = true

        change it to: video_font_enable = false

        I can double check for you after dinner when I can fiddle with my pi.

        Yeah so that didn't work... Not really sure why, the comment above suggests that's what it would do but no luck with false or "false". I also tried commenting out the line and just leaving it blank to no success. Which now I'm at a loss since that's where all the other Onscreen Notification settings are.

        You can do it from the Retroarch GUI (select + X in a game or from the Retropie Menu of emulation station)
        Once in the Retroarch GUI Navigate as follows:
        Settings -> Onscreen Display -> Onscreen Notifications
        The first item there is Onscreen Notifications with the default value of ON just change it to OFF
        You can save it under the CONFIGURATION FILE option back in the Main Menu.

        I'd really like to know why I can't seem to manually edit it that way. When doing it form the Retroarch GUI and saving to a new config file that's the exact value that gets changed.

          Even with it off, the controller notification kept popping up.
          Odd

          Though I did get it to save correctly now!
          Thank you for your help so far.

            Turned off all notifications, but it still has a popup telling me when the config is saved, and that I'm using an Xbox Type controller in port 0 whenever I start a game.. odd.

                  You need to disable also the Graphics Widgets option, which is right below the Onscreen Notifications option.

                      EDIT
                      I found WIdgets under user interface
                      When I turned them off, I not got a yellow text?
                      alt text

                      FINAL EDIT!!
                      FIGURED IT OUT!
                      By turning off BOTH I got rid of the popups!

                      I've been recording walkthroughs and streams and didn't want the popups there!
                      Thank you soo much!!
                      Thank you to everyone who replied!!!

                      Now I just gotta either go to every system and set it as default, or find a way to make this universal default.

                        @Jiryn If you start RetroArch from the RetroPie menu, all settings configured from there will apply to all systems/cores.

                          @simpleethat said in Anyway to turn off the footer when you start a game?:

                          Onscreen Notifications

                          Something extra that people might find useful. I had the same problem getting rid of those notifications, but editing RetroArch via its GUI was creating havoc. I managed to achieve the same result by editing /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg

                          Firstly I did this:
                          Enable usage of OSD messages.
                          video_font_enable = "false"

                          but the secret sauce is to add this line
                          menu_enable_widgets = "false"
