Playstation copy protection discussion
-
About what was said in this video I have to say even if Sony had made larger CD's that would only fit inside the Playstation 1, in the end it wouldn't have made a difference because eventually there would've been a PS1 CD burner on the market used for the same reasons the Retrode is for game cartridges, to either backup or pirate video games and both can be done quite easily with such devices.
I think Sony knew it wouldn't have made a difference and that's why they went with the standard CD format design for the console.
There's no sense in trying to reinvent the wheel and people who are informed and skilled enough always find a way around copy protection. -
interesting vid not watched this before
Still think to this day the copy protection in the uk spyro 3 is the best and also most hilerious ive seen in a ps1 game for those unfamilier various effects would happen with the fairy telling you off for using a pirated copy and eggs and gems would randomly vanish making completion impossible not counting the fact the devs trolled you by randomly switching languages and booting you from levels at random fun memories seeing that one happen

@blackshadow That's one of the more creative ways around piracy, but in order to taunt people for using pirate copies the system it is running on has to have some way to determine whether the copy is a counterfeit or not.
and in theory, measures like this can be bypassed with emulation.
All the files of a PS1 disc can be copied as shown in the video, what your CD drive in your PC cannot do anything about, though is the information that tells the PS1 console whether the copy is legitimate or not which is on a separate track that is not accessible by common CD burner drives used in PC's.
and a Playstation 1 with a mod chip or an emulator such as PSX can get around this problem.
