I know even a pi3 struggles with n64 emulation. I was wondering if anyone has tried using high res texture packs? How did it run, and what games have you tried?

Here is a video I made a while back before major changes were made to improve N64 emulation.

Even then for a few games like Mario World, Ocarina, Mario Kart 64 they were working amazingly well. Some games like Paper Mario its still out of playability but I have been very happy with results. I have meant to update the instructions on the wiki because now installation is a bit different and there are video modes built into run command to support it specifically. With the improvments it has gotten even better.

@Twitch0815 I'm sure there would be lots of retro gamers out there who would appreciate an update to the N64 Wiki if it needs it.
I'll try to schedule a new video about it soon, its come on a long way since I did the last one.

Please read the Docs before asking a new question.

Think you could possibly update the wiki? So far I've been unsuccessful.

Thanks for the quick response and the wiki update! It turns out I had it working yesterday, the changes were so subtle I didn't even notice (mario kart 64). I downloaded a new texture pack just to test out your instructions on the wiki, I was successful. I also noticed a few things along the way:

                  • LoadHiResTextures = False was not in my mupen64plus.cfg
                  • I was unsuccessful using this command. Also shouldn't it up updated to use Glide64, I believe that is the new default video plugin.
                    /opt/retropie/emulators/mupen64plus/bin/mupen64plus.sh mupen64plus-video-rice rom name
                  • Deleting the texture pack and restarting the system had no effects. The texture pack was still being loaded.
                  • After setting a video mode for the emulator + rom you can't remove it. The "Remove video mode choice for emulator + rom" option doesn't appear to actually do anything.

I suspect that you have never actually loaded or selected Glide in the runcommand menu. That is why the variable is not in the config file.

I also suspect you have not chosen the correct video mode and you would defnitely notice the difference. What you are seeing is what everyone would see if they simply uploaded the texture pack some reason a small amount of the texture pack is loaded but not the full thing

Ill try to make a video to make it more clear on what to do, but what you probably need to do is to press x when a game starts chose a glide video mode, you dont have to remove just select a new one, let that game load fully exit. GO back to mupen64plus.cfg edit the specified file and then go back and load the game.

Oh I'm sure you're right. It was actually Rice I never selected in the runcommand. That's probably why it was missing in my mupen64plus.cfg.

On the wiki you mentioned changing the video mode to high resolution, and after your last post it seems like you meant emulator instead. I changed the actual 'Video Mode' in the runcommand, which I can't seem to undo now. You might want to edit the wiki so some poor sap doesn't do what I did. I will leave a picture below just to clear things up.

Sorry if it seems like I'm nitpicking, I'm not. I am just trying to get the facts straight for others who might stumble across this and use it as a guide. As always thanks for your time Twitch, I really appreciate it!!

@tehswiftone what happens if you pick number 7 on that list?

Yea please report, you should be able to select option 7 and remove it.
If that is not working its possibly a bug

and can you paste your mupen64plus.cfg

@backstander The error pops up for only a brief second in the corner so it's hard to read it, but it appears the filename is changing each time I select option 7.

Here is my mupen64 config, sorry about the delay.

this means your configs/all dir has had it's ownership changed to root, and user pi can no long write to the dir to make the changes. to fix this, you can try the command line (from console or ssh term)

                              sudo chown -R pi /opt/retropie/configs/

It's happened to me a few times, maybe someone with access could update the Setup to reset this dir as well as /home/pi...
