I noticed that on both pacman.zip and mspacman.zip in lr-fbneo, if I hold down "start" for about 1s with no credits in, it will add a credit. My actual "insert coin" button is still Select, as default.

It doesn't happen on all games, for example tmnt2po.zip doesn't do it. Is this a feature of the emulator, or the game itself? Did this happen on real hardware? Seems like something I might have heard about if there was such a simple "free play" hack in one of the most popular arcade games ever.

@sleve_mcdichael in lr-fbneo, holding start is the equivalent of pressing the service button on the PCB. In games from the 90s and onward, this would bring up a menu where things like difficulty and pricing could be set. In older titles like Pac-Man, it would register a credit (remember, you pushing select is tricking the game into thinking a coin was inserted, not that a button was pressed).

@dodonpachi ah, so it's the "pressing the service button" that adds the credit, not the fact that I'm holding start (aside from, that's how to make it think I "pressed the service button"). That make sense, thanks!

Some games on pacman hardware have a service menu, and i suppose no one wanted to make a precise list of those games so the diagnostic input ended up being hooked for all of them.
