buster out of LTS support
-
according to this official debian link, Buster (on which RetroPie is based) is officially out of long term support per July 1st, which means no more security updates on the underlying OS
Is there an outlook on an update for buster or bookworm?

You can try the weekly images or install RetroPie on a newer version of Pi OS until the devs have completed their work: https://files.retropie.org.uk/images/weekly/

I guess sugarfree has a point: Try the weekly builds, on your machine / hardware and report back any bugs or oddities, and/or update documentation if needed for the bullseye release. This is beneficial for both parties.
If you can't you still can donate to the project to compensate a little for the hours and hours the RetroPie core team put into it.
In general open source does not provide a schedule: It is ready when its ready. Personally I prefer robustness over having the latest-and-greatest.
That said, Buster is still reliable, and despite the EOL distro I also would never expose a bullseye/bookworm based build on a network where I do not trust everybody, unless I have hardened the system before.

tx, I wasn't aware a weekly build for bullseye was already there, that's good to hear..
but if i go unsupported, i could ofcourse also try the manual setup on a bookworm OS,
However, before i spent way too many time on this .. is the expectation this will already be pretty stable? Or should i wait for more development on that OS?
I alsom am fine to donate some money to this project, how can i do that?

These development images are automatically built and have not been tested. I have tried these images to experiment with a few things, and they were working okay, but there are no guarantees. Of course, I don't recommend using them as a stable system. Additionally, they are missing some features for now, like the splash screen
