hi, i have a old x arcade arcade kit that uses a vga socket that goes into a keyboard PS2 socket adapter. I want to use this on my raspberry pi but that only had a USB port, anyone have any advice? theres a ps2 to usb adapter on ebay but i dont think that would work.

      thanks
      mat

A ps2 to USB adapter will work, but I think it won't work with with the xarcade driver and act as a keyboard only, which only acts as one controller. It may also cause issues if you need to do anything with a real keyboard. X arcade does sell an upgrade kit to the USB version of the board here

Which will allow you to use the driver to identify the 2 sides as 2 hid controllers.

@mat03111984 My advice is to rip out all the wiring and circuit board but leave the micro switches. You can then grab a keyboard encoder and some wire and away you go. You can even fit a pi in it.

If it has the PS2 port next to the DB9 port, you can use the PS2 to USB adapter, but in order to get it to work you have to have a PS2 keyboard plugged in at the same time. This was their first generation board and that was a limitation of it. They do have an upgrade kit that includes the new board and a USB cable if you'd rather do that... https://shop.xgaming.com/collections/adapters/products/x-arcade-usb-adapter

Personally, I ripped that board out and hacked a couple of gravis gamepad pros, soldering the wires from the microswitches to them instead. Too many issues using keyboard for both player one and two...

so could i just replace the board with this one?

                https://www.modmypi.com/raspberry-pi/arcade/arcade-controllers/controlblock-2-player-joystickbutton-controller-and-power-switch

                and replace wiring with these?

                https://www.modmypi.com/raspberry-pi/arcade/arcade-wiring/arcade-button-quick-connect-wires-set-of-10-pairs

                then use theses buttons

                https://www.modmypi.com/raspberry-pi/arcade/arcade-buttons/arcade-button-30mm-translucent-blue

basically just using the wooden shell template and replacing the innards?

also if you know of anything better than these components too please say

Why would you need to replace the wire and buttons? Just reuse the ones in the X-Arcade. You just need to replace the control board. I would think the control block should work fine, though I've never used it. I would think the easiest is the replacement USB board from X-Arcade I linked before. That would be the most plug and play. It's as simple as unplugging the cable plugs from the current board, and plugging them into the new one. They have a video on their site on how to do it... https://support.xgaming.com/support/solutions/articles/12000003248-usb-pcb-upgrade-kit-installation-guide

This would turn your stick into (what appears to the pi as) a keyboard that you can use... There is another video somewhere on reprogramming it for better accessibility, or use the x-arcade2jstick driver in the drivers section of RetroPie...

@mat03111984 you can just reuse the wiring from the original x arcade if you're brave enough to cut them. The control board will work fine. Have fun with your mod :)

ok cool, ill get the usb upgrade and hopefully it will all be good. i was just thinking that the buttons and wires dont cost much so i was gonna get a full system that works for the pi so theres no risk

@mat03111984 The x-arcade buttons and switches are fine, all you need is an encoder. I ripped out all the wiring from mine as it was exactly cut and only just fit in there. Just rewire it to an ipac and away you go.
