Old TV Theme Idea
-
This is the first im hearing about this carousel mod, is it completely customizable and movable? This is a neat idea, do you have any other examples of this mod in action? Are they considering adding it to the main distro?
-
Best looking theme I've seen so far, I'd love to use this.
-
@Capeman Let me know once you are ready for testers. I have almost all of my systems set up for video previews and would love to see your theme idea in action.
-
It may take me a bit to make it... i have LOTS of responsibilities that keep me from leisure, hahaha. I'll keep this post updated with my progress.
-
@mattrixk You make lots of themes, when layering objects, im guessing you order your code elements so the first tag renders on the bottom, second tag would render in the middle and last tag would render as the topmost layer?
Also am i to assume that logo and gamelist tags will always render in front of everything else regardless of tag order in the xml?
-
@Capeman that's pretty much how it works. You can set set the order of any "extra" elements by their placement in the code (the same way CSS works).
The metadata has its own ordering though, so it doesn't matter what order they are in the code. Md_image will always cover the gamelist. As for the others, I'm unsure of their exact order, and I'm not near my computer to test.

@Capeman That looks really good. Would you use a different TV for each system, to kind of fit in with the years they were around? So Playstation would have a newer TV than NES, etc.
Edit:
Another option might be to put the wheel art/game logo in place of the system logo, then have the system logo on theTV somewhere, or above the gamelist.+1 to these. System logo above the game list and game logo above the TV. For arcade, the game logo could go in the marquee.
@Capeman, have you started work on themifying this yet?
-
Can I have the background image at least?

Yes, i have! I have an alpha version done, but i need to test it on a fresh install of retropie (i don't want to mess up my good install). Probably just a couple more days before i post a dropbox link for people to test.

@Capeman Have you tried using one of the windows builds that are floating around? @fieldofcows has one on his GitHub.

Can't, on a Mac. I have a windows tower, but really don't feel like lugging it out.

I love the idea, I would love to see the diferent TVs idea but I preffer the system logo avove the Tv, also you could add the option to show video footage in the Tv
-
@sergioad That is the whole idea, the tv will overlay the video snap.
-
Cool

Got a quick test of this theme done, i just have NES done right now, but adding each additional system is nothing more than duping a folder and changing some parameters. I might make different tv styles for newer systems, but i havent gotten too far into it yet.
Also, @mattrixk you might know this, is there any way in the theme itself to silence the sound on the videos or will i have to batch them in handbrake to remove it all manually? I prefer a theme to be seen, not heard haha.
-
@Capeman I'm pretty sure you would have to re-encode them to remove the sound.
Will your theme handle Marquee/Wheel images of the games logo? Also, I love the idea of different TVs to mark the different years the systems officially came out for. Theme is looking good!
-
@HurricaneFan I was thinking of making the code for it, comment it out in the final and include some instructions on how to activate it. Im just working on getting it setup this way first.
You're probably right about the videos, bla, always extra steps.
-
@Capeman What are you thinking for theme design on the handheld systems? They wouldn't have TVs.
-
@Capeman Sorry mate, I don't know about the video sound. You'd have to talk to @fieldofcows as he's the one that made the Video Preview. My gut says muting the sound is not something you can do within ES, but if you ask super nicely it might be something fieldofcows can put on their to-do list.
