I think they expect it to be dumped at some point. The only way that indie developers make money is from physical sales, and from what i've read lately on limited edition carts, they sell out like crazy. So even though emulation is easy, console purists and collectors will double down on opportunities to get limited run physical releases on real carts.

Look at thriving communities like AtariAge, and you'll see why. New atari games are being made all the time and they sell for 25 to 50 bux a piece - and they usually give away the roms for free on the same website (craziness!). Collectors are a rabid breed and I'm jealous of their dedication to the original format and disposable income!

If after some time, the developer releases a digital download for sale, I'd definitely pay for a game this polished.

I read this game uses a custom in-cart chipset called the DT128M16VA1LT that may or may not boost rom capacity, add more ram and add more sound channels. This game in rom form may not even be compatible with current emulators without some sort of update. Who knows, it will obviously be dumped after release, as was their other Genesis release, Pier Solar... but who knows if the rom will even work.

I guess that's a good way to passively resist the emulation scene, haha

I've bought a physical cart of a small run of flappy bird on gameboy. yes, the rom was available before the physical run, but i wanted something quirky and strangely unique. it wasn't $70 though... but yes as has been said, the writers of games on carts rarely expect their carts not to be dumped and most physical releases have free downloads. they know their physical cartridge will sell out to OG hardware fetishists/completionists so ROM dumps don't really bother them.

Wow, they did 'Pier Solar'. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Those guys are really at the top of their craft.

Yes, and it appears that they also ported that game over to wii-eshop and other digital download formats. So im guessing the genesis release of Paprium will be the first of more than a couple, but i wouldnt hold my breath as to how long of a wait that would be.

I am tempted as I also love beat-em-ups....but I still have to beat Streets of Rage 3 (can't even friggin do that on the Pi when I can save and restore save games at will - let alone on a Genesis console ;)
