My All Time Favorite Game is... and Why?

i like some of the selection you guys have chose, and i like how someone agreed with me on Battletoads !! awesome, i am trying to complete Battletoads without warps or cheats @meleu it would be a life time accomplishment for me, heck as i said above i own the retail copy of the NES version, in fact its the only version i ever owned, as i bought the game as a kid and still have it haha !! Stupid game hard as freak, but i love you so much lmao

@starmaker69 do you play it with retroachievements? I think it adds some fun to the playing. :-)
There's an achievement for beat the game with no warps.

I am quite fond of Chase HQ or Midnight Resistance on the ZX Spectrum (which was the platform I played them on originally). These are games I still go to every now and then, though these days I do it on MAME :)
Still, they were loads of fun for my younger self, and even a few months ago I beat Midnight Resistance on MAME on a single credit.

Super Metroid, by far my favourite game ever. Good graphics, great music, a bit of suspense, action and a bit of thinking required.
-
@starmaker69, I am embaressed to say it but I think TMNT on the nes is my "favorit game". It's definately the one I play the most. I like the music, the nostalgia, the colors, the goofyness and the difficulty. This game is just the right level of difficulty for me--it's hard enough to keap me engaged but easy enough the I almost always beat it in about 25min...If it was up to me I would pick a cooler game as my favorite like battletoads or Zelda 2 but I don't think we get to pick our favorites.
ps: Love battletoads dude. I think it's one of the best games on the nes. I was just playing it last weekend. I got to the last level and gave up. I started playing on the rpi but gave up and went back to the original console. The emulation was so bad I couldn't stand it, I actually got dizzy from the graphic glitches during the clinger winger.
-
@meleu i beat battletoads on the nes many times as a kid without getting hit once since i had memorized the game as it has no randomization to it. I had no clue there was even a way to warp in it. Learn something new every day. Great game though. Now that i am old i could use some warps. ;)
-
@rig have you verified its a glitch in more than 1 of the nes emulators?
-
@edmaul69 no I haven't. The screen looks like its skipping frames, it happens through the whole game, the sound is also really bad. I am using whatever the default emulator is. I have a rgb modded nes so I don't have the motivation for opitmizing the nes on the pie. I was playing it on the pie as a kind of lag test...about the warps--I have beat the game without them but I always use them now. Or at least the warp to skip through that level where you ride the rocket through hell. That level makes me feel not so good
-
@rig so pressing the 0 zero button on your controller (whichever button your controller uses for the zero button) right after you select a game, change the emulator from fceumm to nestopia. It is a far better emulator in my opinion. You arent using a pi zero are you?
-
My all time favourite is clearly "Civilization 1" for PC followed closely bei "Railroad Tycoon 1", "Silent Service 2" and "Pirates Gold". I'm playing this games for over 25 years now (yes i'm playing them until this day!) and all of the successors were not as good as the originals. Did i mention that Sid Meier is a genius? :-)
When it comes to console titles my 2 favourites are "Sonic 1" for the Master System followed by the incredibly good Action-RPG game "Golden Axe Warrior", which was not officially released here in Germany, but a friend bought it in Ireland.

Have I really got to be the one to bring Final Fantasy VII into this (I can see me getting a fair few down votes for this :D).
I think a lot of these choices are down to the age you were when you played them - at least FFVII is for me. I played it when I was about 13 or 14 and it was the first game that I played where I felt actual emotion in a game (helped by Nobou Uematsu's phenomenal music). Great story and characters (to a 13/14 year old!) and great music, the 2 things I look for above all else in games.
So yeah, FFVII. Bring on the hatred :)
-
@sonicsheppard no hate here. I absolutely love final fantasy vii. I have beat it a ton of times. I probably have almost 2000 hours put into that game. More time than any other game. My problem nowadays is that i cant spend that much time in a game. The nes and ps1 are the best systems in my opinion. So many great games on both.

You were the king of the neighborhood, weren't you?
Don't tell me that you were used to beat Ninja Gaiden with same calm!
-
@edmaul69 , no. I got a rpi 3 that is overclocked. It outputs via the gpio to a crt, thanks for the tip on the emulator. I will try it out this week :), I don't play nes on the rpi but I do like tinkering with this stuff
-
Final Fantasy 7 ruled! Are you worried/excited about the remake?
-
@meleu funny enough i beat ninja gaiden probably 100 times as a kid. Of course i played on a 9 ft projection screen. So that might have helped some. :)

C'mon man! It isn't april 1st anymore! No need to lie! :-)
I thought that only those asian gamers that beat Super Mario Bros blindfolded were able to beat Ninja Gaiden.
Why don't you beat them again and register those in retroachievements?! :-)
-
@meleu does the snes ninja gaiden have achievements? I might try in that one since it has game saves. I would like to do it on the nes but i dont want to have to use savestates. And i cant do long gaming sessions because of my alternating strabismus. I have problems that make me start seeing double vision or everything starts looking wavy when i have too much eye strain from focusing.
-
haha, yeah no save states on the nes ninja gaiden. The only person I know who beat it as a kid would leave his nes on overnight so he could try again the next day from where he left off.
The hardest part about ninja gaiden is the last 2 forms of the final boss. however you can use a cheap trick to beat them by using the spiral atack, it kills any boss in 1 or 2 hits. Kind of hard to make it to the boss with this weapon but still easier than training yourself to beat the boss without it. That being said, the second form of the last boss is probably my favorite boss battle in videogamedome. So I like to do this battle without the trick....Hey what is your favorite boss battle?
