Figured it out.. kinda lame, might need fixing..

I had to go in and DISABLE then re-ENABLE the splashscreen PRIOR to selecting it from the list.

@TMNTturtlguy This is truly awesome and you, sir, are a master creator.
Just a thought, how about a "Game Over" or "You Win" splashscreen in ComicBook style when we quit ES? That will complete the entre suite....

@ortsac I like the idea! I have more updates for the theme and I also want to start creating game launch splash screens for each system, I am going to add your idea to the mix!

Doh! I was just trying to create the loading screens using the script. If you're going to make them yourself, I'll just wait!

So I'm going to bed.. it's 1am here. I wanted to real quick check and see if the video loads up like it should again. And it doesn't.. Same results as before. But it got me thinking. The splash video I was using before I had placed in the root retropie folder. The one prior to location served with samba. I was wondering why I did that rather than use the /splashscreens folder. But I think I remember why. When I built my system, I intented to us an external USB hard drive to store my roms and videos. That all works. But the /splashscreens folder is located on that drive, rather than the SD card. So what I think is happening, the drive isn't fully powered up/spinning by the time the system is looking for the video and is thus unable to play it.

Is there a way to MOVE that /splashscreens folder off the drive and onto the SD card? Would that require a lot of extra work editing files to show the new location? I thought about maybe just symlinking the folder, having it physically on the SD but that wouldn't work either if the system can't access the hard drive yet. Maybe it's better if I just leave it as it was and just replace the video file rather than trying to add it to a folder with others.

@hansolo77 place the splashscreens in /opt/retropie/supplementary/splashscreens. And instead of choosing "own splashscreens" choose retropie splashscreens.

Yup, that's what I just did. I tried doing a bunch of crazy-ass symlinking, but none of it worked. Mostly because I'm not familiar enough with Linux yet to know how to do it. I thought I could create a link in the /opt/blah-blah folder that points to a more easily accessible folder (/home/pi). But I couldn't figure out the syntax right. No big deal. I got it working now. I wish there was a better way to handle all that, but my case is individual. I highly doubt it comes up frequently enough to warrant changing any underlying script codes. I mean, how many people have a set up like mine, where they have the roms and videos stored on an external usb hard drive, 1 default controller with 6 dedicated system controllers for when I'm feeling "the mood", a special requirement for "fancy" looking interface, ability to earn achievements, and all kept inside an old NES case? :) Still, I like the challenge and I'm learning a lot!

Like that splash Video very much, but have great problems using it.
But this is for sure a general problem with my specific setup: i tried other mp4s and get the same results.
The first seconds everything is fine, but then 3/4 of the picture looks like it got ECM-jammed by an alien mothership landing near my house.

I allready searched the Forum and tried to modify the autostart.txt by forcing emulationstation to wait till the video is finished.
Works!, but...then emulationstation is of course not loaded in background, something that i dont want this way.

Someone also mentioned that it would be a solution to modify the flags concerning the buffer of omxplayer.
Does anyone know where i can find them?

Besides of that: AWESOME Splashvideo!!!, great work!

@sirhenrythe5th Thanks for the kind words. Can you share the basic info about your system as stated in the "read this first" section. It would be good to know what pi you are running, how it was installed etc. Since you are having issues with all splash screen videos you definitely have an issue with your setup/install. I would recommend starting a new thread in the help section and provide pertinent details there as this issue is not concerning the ComicBook Splash Screen, but your setup. Thanks

@TMNTturtlguy Nice splash screen, looks great! Did you make it yourself, or did it start from a template? I'm going to guess After Effects?

Although at almost a minute long, it's perhaps too long. I'd love to see a shorter version at around 20-30 seconds. Maybe removing a couple of video sections, or simplifying camera moves so that they're a bit quicker, or just time-remapping it to be a bit faster. Perhaps a little bit of everything.

Sections that are ripe for shortening/simplifying:
                            0:04 - 0:09
                            0:11 - 0:15
                            0:21 - 0:23

I think everything can be tightened a bit, but those sections specifically.

I'm sure you're probably editing to the music a bit, but maybe the music can be edited to be shorter as well. Take the beginning third and blend it into the end third, and you've removed the middle section of the song and cut down the music to 35-40 seconds. Do a few more edits like that were appropriate, and you might be able to get the music down to 25-30 without sacrificing it's integrity.

                            Well done, thanks for sharing!

@TMNTturtlguy It is awesom that you ended the video on ES screen so it blends nicely.

I don't know how I missed this, but well done! This is going straight to my splash screen videos:)

                                      Notes for others:

                                      • this needs to be on the SD card, as it usually runs before the drivers are mounted. Had the same problems in the past.
                                      • if you're having trouble with OMX Player when ES is loading in the background, add disable_overscan=1 to your /boot/config.txt file. It should help.

                                      Happy Sunday!

@pjft solved my problem another way:

I editet the /etc/init.d/asplashscreen.sh an removed the syntax "-b " from commandline #39.
It's the one handling the omx-player.
Dont know why, but all Videos run great now and emulationstation is loaded in background.
