Platformer AI

I want to stick to the mario universe. It needs to be either gameboy, or NES. So what game should the AI test? Also I know this probably asked before, how do I start a rom, then have a program run?

Being a platfomer puzzle game starring Mario, 'Wrecking Crew' might give it a run for it's money. Also, you can setup a program to run and exit alongside a game using the runcommand-onstart and runcommand-onend scripts.
