New Comic Book Theme!

@hansolo77 said in New Comic Book Theme!:
build a custom collection to hold all the games that have achievements in them.
haha! that's a great idea! :) How didn't I think it before?! I'll do it too!
-
@meleu @hansolo77 I will look into that in the future. I just updated all versions of the theme to include the new "Default" system. You can go ahead and create your Achievements collection and create it as if there was a theme folder for it. ES will now assign this to a default comic background and use the ComicBook Font to create the system name. It won't be the cool colors, but it will be the correct font. It should work well for you as a place holder. Once i get a chance to update the theme with your request, ES will automatically switch out the "Default" for the new folder when it exists. Pretty neat feature implemented by @jdrassa. Update the ComicBook theme from es_themes and the default system should work.
-
@meleu Yeah I thought you might like that idea. You're one of the devs I know that actually participate in all that too. Hopefully some future version of ES will be able to pull the game lists from RetroAchievements automatically. Maybe even display them? :) That'd be cool, if RetroArch devs can't be bothered with creating a system to display the icon art, maybe ES can.
@TMNTturtlguy I wasn't aware things were already progressing to that point. It was meant to be a future project idea anyway (with some kinda rip art, etc). In fact, even now, I'm not even sure if custom collections is a thing yet. I just know it's "in the works".
-
@hansolo77 I have added it to the list of future things to work on! for now though you can update the theme and test it out when you have a chance. As for the custom collections, @pjft released the testing version today Please Test Creating Custom Collections
-
^_^ Cool, something to play with when I get home from work tomorrow!
-
@TMNTturtlguy Hi! Just updated the theme, and noticed that the
custom-collections
folder is namedcustom-collection
in the theme, that's why I wasn't finding it.Thought I'd give you a heads up, as it's missing a "s" :)
Hope you're doing well!

All versions of the theme have been updated to per @pjft to modify the folder name for custom-collections to match his new features in ES. The update is available through es_themes on the retropie menu.
-
@hansolo77 maybe filtering games with cheevos instead of creating a new "ES system" (or collection) would be neater.
Let's see what ES hackers have to say about what I posted here. -
Excellent looking theme. I have experienced one issue though that I can't seem to fix.
I'm using the most recent version of this theme and have experienced freezing at random points when scrolling through game lists. RetroPie will either completely freeze and force me to hard reset the Raspberry Pi device, or semi freeze preventing me from continuing to scroll through the game list. Scraped video previews will continue to play until i manually restart the device.
I'm using a Raspberry Pi 3 device overclocked to (1350) with more than adequate cooling, and have not experienced this problem with other themes.
-
@beastmode when did you last update ES? I have not experienced this myself related to the theme and have not yet seen others with the same issue. One thought might be that your image, video and marquee file sizes that you have scraped might be a larger file size, and since this theme places all of those images in each view, ES is having a hard time loading the images as you scroll to each game, thus freezing up your system as you scroll.
Another question is what you are using to play your video? Are you using the OMX player? I know you are not having issues with the video itself, but if you are not using OMX, try that as it uses less resources to run the videos.
-
@tmntturtlguy I last updated RetroPie and ES about a week ago. I'm using the OMX player as well. I used Sselph’s scraper to scrape all of the image and video files. I was messing around with the ES VRAM settings though, perhaps that has something to do with it?
-
@beastmode set VRAM to 80. Restart ES.
If the permanent freezes/crashes happen again do report back.
-
@pjft Will do. Thanks.
-
@pjft VRAM set to 80mb but I'm still experiencing freezing. I'm unable to scroll but I am able to ssh into the Pi and reboot the device.
I tried with the 4:3 theme and it seems to crash with this reason:
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'char const*'
Abort -
@beastmode when did you download the theme? Can you try to update it? I am not familiar with the error you are getting. Do the problems only exist in the gamelist view? Are there any issues in the system view? Does this happen in all systems? Can you chane your ui settings to detailed and see if you still have the same problems?
The only thing I can think of is that the new default system change I added is causing issues, otherwise I have not made any changes to the theme that should be causing errors.
-
@beastmode i did some searches on the error and I think it may be a bad image file? See these posts, can you isolate this to a specific system?
-
@tmntturtlguy I think you may be right, dude. Either a corrupt RetroPie image, corrupt game image, or corrupt gamelist.xml files. I downloaded the theme yesterday morning through Emulation Station's theme menu. I'll start fresh and see if the problem persists. Thanks for your help.
gamelist basic --> works perfectly.
system view --> works perfectly.
detailed view --> crashes.
automatic --> crashes. -
@beastmode keep me posted
-
@tmntturtlguy Will do.
-
I know reducing VRAM to 80 solved my issues with the freezes. I wonder if it would be a prudent idea to maybe have ES just automatically use 80??
