little new RetroAchievements related feature in RetroArch 1.6.3
-
RetroArch 1.6.3 is out and you can get it through RetroPie-Setup now (from source, not sure if the binaries were updated)! Great huh?
We, RetroAchievements users, know well that their server isn't that powerfull. Sometimes you start a game and RetroArch doesn't load the Achievements List properly. Most of the cases it's due an RetroAchievements server overload or being down...
And if you're a cheevos feature tester, like @grenade44 and myself, you lost count of how many times you had to "launch the game -> RGUI -> Quick Menu -> Achievements List" just to be sure the Achievements List was properly loaded.
Well, in RetroArch 1.6.3 there was added the "Achievements Verbose Mode". So if you want to see some more cheevos related messages right after launching a game (such as successfull login and the number of cheevos you have unlocked) you can use the Achievements Verbose Mode. Put this line in your
retroarch.cfg
:cheevos_verbose_enable = true
I've updated the respective wiki page accordingly.
Cheers!

Updated to Retroarch 1.6.3 through Binary and added that line to my cfg, looks to work nicely! Tells you how many achievements you've unlocked for a game (or 0/0 if there aren't any) and says what profile is logged in.
Really cool new feature. Thanks for highlighting it @meleu !
-
@sonicsheppard I'm also planning to add a message like "This game doesn't feature achievements" when launching a game with no cheevos (and
cheevos_verbose_enable
is true). -

@meleu ok so now for the reason i was trying to update retropie setup. do i install from source or binary?
-
@edmaul69 the user @sonicsheppard said that he/she updated from binary and got 1.6.3.
-
@meleu yeah i updated from binary and it worked. After i realized i had deleted my cheevos login info somehow. Thanks for this. I like getting the info on my cheevos. Now i need to trifle through my retroarch.cfg to figure out how to move the text to get it out from behind my overlays. Again :/

@meleu what's the best introductory link / thread in terms of learning about how to get started with RetroAchievements?
-
@meleu Excellent! Got it to work. If it does not log into the server, (like if there is an error or server is full), do you receive a message indicating you are not logged in? Or is simply the absence of any message the indicator of that?

Just create an account and configure your retroarch to use it. You'll learn the rest naturally. ;-)
How to config on RetroPie:
https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/RetroAchievementsI think that there are some videos on youtube talking about what RetroAchievements are, but usually they talk about official emulators.

Currently the absence of any message indicates that the Achievements List isn't loaded, the reason can be several.
I'm planning to add more specific diagnosis messages in the future, that was just the first step. :-)
