What games are you playing this week? 2017-05-08
-
Now the image was correctly uploaded:
Let me dedicate this week to the gorilla theme... :-)
Now I wanna try to get the badge for Toki (NES). But beat the game without dying is quite challenging... I think I can reach the last boss without dying, but I always lose some lives in it...

@meleu What exactly is this "RetroAchievements" thing? I went to the website and it looks like it's some sort of leader board for older games?

It's like those trophies in PlayStation Network.
There are some conditions you have to do in the game to "get the achievement". In some games the achievements is just a progress log: "finish the stage 1", "complete the bonus stage", "beat the game". But there are some really challenging achievements, like "beat the game without dying", "beat the game in less than 2 hours", "defeat the boss without being harmed".
Do you get it?
-
@meleu I think so. Neat idea.
-
@obsidianspider Why not try? Create an account an then configure it in your RetroPie: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/RetroAchievements/
-
@obsidianspider There are some funny achievements too. Like in Contra (NES):
- Hydrophobia: don't touch the water on stage 1.
- Don't press left in the stage 1.
In Super Mario Land (Gameboy):
- Coin Allergy: reach world 2-1 without collecting a coin.
As you see, it's just a funny way to revisit those games in a way you would never play if there were no achievements... :-)
-
Those are the ones I prefer most. It's a bit like 'NES Remix'. I wish every game had more of them.
-
@meleu
Yeah, I also prefer the funny ones. These remind me of the "Little Rocket Man" trophy/achievement for Half-Life 2. There's a garden gnome near the beginning of the game that you have to carry with you through most of the game and put it in a rocket just before you blast it off into space lol. I accomplished this on my 2nd play-through. I remember taking screenshots of the gnome along the way! -

Don't press left in stage 1.I actually got both of those on my first run, unknowingly.
-
@lilbud you didn't press left "accidentally" or did you think "I'll go all over this stage without touching left on the d-pad"?
I think the part where one may have a strong desire to press left is while positioning to shoot the boss.
-
@meleu I just didn't press left at all, never thought about it.
-
I think I'm done with gorillas for this week...
I don't have enough patience to try to complete the game without losing a life. So I think I can survive without that badge. :-)
Now I'm going to try to focus on eliminating an old item I have on my "things to do before die" list since I was 12 years old: finish Little Nemo - The Dream Master (NES).

@meleu I must live in a cave, this is the first I've heard of retroarchievements.org. There goes the rest of my day. ;)

One less item on my list! Woohoo!!!
OK. I miraculously found a little free time this week and played video games desperately. Finished Donkey Kong (Gameboy), Toki (NES) and Little Nemo (NES). Now I will try to play with python and try to implement what I commented in this topic.

You're on quite a role. If I happen to read about you solving chess this week I won't be surprised.
-
@mediamogul I'm afraid my english skills put me on one of those situations pointed out by @backstander in another topic. Then I'm gonna follow his advice:

Sorry, it was a math joke (if you really stretch the definition of "joke"). Don't worry, the only other one I know is that 3 out of 2 people have trouble with fractions.

That's a good one! It's also great to see a pi joke that's not a food pun.
