@retrofreak89 Since this game seems to a DOS one, you can try installing DOSbox from the ports and adding the game to the pc folder.
Start from https://retropie.org.uk/docs/PC/ and use the information provided there, other Ultima games appear to be running fine on DOSbox according to the compatibility games list from that page.

@retrofreak89 that list is not complete. the only way is to give it a shot.

from what i see it does not look like much of a problem to get running.

            RPi3B+ / 200GB/ RetroPie v4.5.14, RPi4 Model B 4gb / 256gb / RetroPie 4.8.2
            RPi5 4gb / 512gb / RetroPie 4.8.9 -Basic

That's why I said other Ultima games when referring to the compatibility list. If you can make it work, you can add it to the list so other can find it.

                Hi RetroFreak,

it is not really a problem running Ultima 7 in RetroPie.
I left the RetroPie System for Fire TV but i can help you, if you´ve got questions running U7 in Dosbox.

The only tricky thing about it, is the memory manager origin used in that old days.
So it will not run with standard dosbox config, but you can set a special one for U7.
You just have to switch vaues in the memory section: XMS/EMS,UMB.

I can send you my Dosbox config which works with the rare german
and the standard english version of Ultima 7 if you need it.

                best regards

Have you tried the tips here first?

I'm currently playing Ultima 5, so haven't got to that one yet. So far the C128 (VICE) has been the best versions of 3,4, and 5.

System Config: Retropie 4.4 with full desktop, RPi 3B, 256gb SD, 5v 2.1A 5,200 mAH USB battery. EasyMSX controller mounted with Pimoroni Hyperpixel 4 (non touch). Also running 4.6 on a 4gb Pi 4 serving as my primary desktop computer now.

For anyone who's interested, both Ultima 7 The Black Gate and Serpent Isle will run in DOSBox if you stick with the GOG config file but change "umb=true" to "umb=false" per @VictimRLSH's link above. I also recommend checking out the "Ultima 7 Nitpicker's Delight" patch and the included "UltimaHacks by Eureka Dragon" patch. The "Modern Font for Ultima 7" patch found at the same location works with both The Black Gate and Serpent Isle as well.

There's also Ultima Underworld (PSX) that now has a full English translation patch available as of today.

Didn't feel like making a completely new topic for this. :)

@RetroFreak89 I know this is a little late to the party - but there is a program called Exult, which is a recreation of the game engine that Ultima VII used - and there's a linux version of the source.

I haven't personally tried to build this on a Pi, but....

In theory, it could be done, and you could have a more 'native' running version.

I used Exult's windows builds many moons ago, and they were pretty stellar for usability and such. Many bugs were fixed, more modern systems are obviously supported, etc.

If all you want to do is play the game - this is a good way to go.

If you absolutely must have the original exe - then dosbox is likely the best way to go - maybe specfiically "dosbox pure".

Either way, google will get you to Exult or DosBox Pure..

                            Good luck, avatar!
