I set my system up a while back to scrape gameplay videos rather than static art, and it's a major improvement in my opinion.

One aspect I like a lot is that the screensaver can be set to display these videos randomly, but I think it would be even better if they could have the same (or similar) scanline shader as used when actually playing the games.

Is this possible, or could it be implemented?

@andrewh You could try using VLC's video effects, but there's nothing in stock VLC install that would implement a scanline effect. There'a film-grain effect, or a posterize effect, but that's not close to the scanline shaders available in RetroArch.

Not at the moment. There's nothing that can render over OMX Player which is the default video player for the screensaver.

My best recommendation could be too use handbrake to batch convert the videos and add one such overlay on top.

I've done some searching, and there doesn't seem to be anything suitable. All I was able to find are a small number of posts on various forums asking if this can be done.

I guess that'd be possible. I'll give it a try and see if I can get something reasonable without significantly impacting filesize (I've got ~1.8GB of video files on the system).
It doesn't look like there's a lot of development going on for OMX player, so I'm not sure whether it's even worthwhile submitting a request for this :-/

I don't know if it's possible during the game, but it's such a great idea when the screensaver is displaying videos. I tried to set up once but failed, I only have now some blank images...

It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can do only a little. Do what you can.
