Chicuelo Theme

@chicuelo I installed your theme to try it. It's a bit "sparse" for me to be honest and I do like simple GUIs.
But can I ask why it is up/down to navigate between systems? Seems counter-intuitive when every other ES theme is left/right. Is it just to be different?Certainly not every other, there are a bunch of vertical scrolling themes out. ES was originally only horizontal scrolling, so that would be why there are many more of that type.

@keigan Which other ones scroll vertically?

Well off the top of my head I can't list any because I've only ever used themes I created, ones which scroll vertically. But a look at the ES Themes page and judging by the screen shots it seems as though the following all use vertical scroll:
metro
tv
flat
fundamental
steampunk
showcase
SpaceOddity
Royal_Primicia
playstation
superdisplay
boxalloyred
boxalloyblue
greenilicious
license2game
comiccrazy
tributeGoT
tributeSTrek
tributeSWars
scv720these are just ones uploaded there, I'm sure there are many others

@keigan So themes for Aloshi's og ES then? I won't try to track them all down... if they still work in the current RetroPie fork of ES (I doubt it). Anyway, thanks for the effort. Just seems counter-Intuitive to me, as I said. The much-loved and used Themes in this version of ES scroll horizontally for systems.

Aloshi's original version of ES was horizontal only and there is no reason they wouldn't still work. The much "loved an used" themes were created when horizontal scrolling was the only option (With the exception of the NES/SNES mini themes, which are following an original Nintendo layout which was horizontal). They were worked on for a long time by the creators. Aloshi's ES also forced a faded white bar across the middle of the screen, which limited the amount of tweaking at the time.
As ES evolved, that was removed an the option to move the bars elsewhere were implemented, then eventually the vertical scrolling. I believe a grid system is in the works as well, which would alter the designs even more. Nothing wrong with options, if you're not a fan of the vertical scrolling, there are many themes that don't use it. I'm pretty sure you could turn it on and off as well if you'd like and you could scroll left or right.

@keigan To be honest, I don't really care. I was simply offering some feedback.
You obviously don't appreciate it. And you are coming across as arrogant because someone dared to offer any opinion other than "This is great".
It's not to my taste and I hope it is wiped off the face of this earth! -Joke. -

I only replied to your claim that "every other" theme scrolls left to right. I was simply pointing out that that isn't true and more and more themes are using vertical. I explained why horizontal was more common. I said that there is nothing wrong with options and it's possible to turn on or off.
Take it how you please, I wouldn't care if you said it's the worst theme you'd ever seen. I didn't create the theme, I enjoy it, and simply tweaked it to suit my personal taste.

@chicuelo I won't mind doing the coding part, at least that's something I can do because I'm bad at doing graphics.
You are the man! if you want I can contact you by mail or facebook and we can finish the theme, add more systems and upload to retropie. Of course you have half of the credits :)
Like I said, just upload your files to a separate repository on github and post the link here. Then I will try to get it working. If you could tell me what images you are making, I actually could adapt the version I already have.
I guess you're making two background images (one for system view and one for the gamelist, although maybe you need one extra for the basic gamelist), then logos for every system, controller images and system artwork. That's at least how I would do it to keep it simple. And if you upload the backgrounds and just one set for any system I could work something out. If you then keep the same sizes for every other system, it is a piece of cake to add new ones. -

Its similar to what you suggested, I will make the repo soon. Thanks!

It's not to my taste and I hope it is wiped off the face of this earth! -Joke.I use a vertical navigation because I find a more logical experience on making the navigation always the same way. Not at first horizontal for the systems and then vertical for the games, you are not making a Fatality. Also if you have tried hyperspin, Mala or even pandora box, you are familiarized with this navigation.
Refer on your taste, for your luck you have out there lot of themes with a pixelated sonic flying around the screen jumping over a 3D Mario and a spinning arround Qbert on the same circus scene. This theme means to be simple but yet understandable, with only the necessary elements and a graphic coherence. The main character here are the games, not the graphic paraphernalia around of it, or on the cab.
Anyway thanks for your feedback. All the comments are appreciated -
I actually prefer the horizontal scrolling system view too, because it is also the way to switch systems when on gamelist view. So it is coherent through the whole theme and reminds me of the PlayStation X navigation.
But luckily it is just one small value that needs to be changed to switch the behavior and therefore I think it is not that much of a problem because everyone is able to do it themselves.

Thats a very good point. I forget to say I disabled the quick navigation on game list view so you have to go back to select the system you want to play

@chicuelo There's a way to disable that!? Never heard of that before. Probably because it's been a while since I looked at the options menu.

Basically You have a global background for main menu and game select and over there you have the separated files: logo, controller and character background.I left the repo here:

Very excited to see this theme expanded on. Will definitely put it to use after it's revamped for 1080P and more systems added.

I'm creating the theme in 1680x945 because at 1920x1080 the pi has some lag. At this resolution you have good enough definition and the hardware still manage them. With a lot of help I'm improving some assets to be independent and in any resolution it will be nice rendered.
Other systems are going to be added soon to -
@chicuelo Sounds great!

@chicuelo I will get to work on it in a few hours, pretty busy right now. But I took a look at the files and have to ask, do you want me to add the indicator? I mean like before, it would be different for everyone. I could add it and put it in a comment block so you can enable it for yourself or to keep the code cleaner I can just post the code here and you can add it later.

I think it is better to comment and ignore the code, so if anyone wants to make use of this could do it.
Dont rush and take your time! When you can take your time its fine for me, thanks again!
