April 2018 Game of the Month - Earthbound
-
Earthbound / Mother 2
Developers: Ape, HAL Laboratory
Publisher: Nintendo
Platform: SNES
THIS GAME STINKS! This was Nintendo's plan to make this game a success, instead, they ended up making box forts in Sears-Roebuck and KB Toys. Earthbound, also known as Mother 2 in Japan, was released in 1994 in Japan and one year later in the U.S. Europe didn't get this game until much later. This game was released to mixed reviews back when it was released. Reviewers thought the game was too simplistic when compared to other games released at the same time, like FF3/6 and Secret of Mana. The bizarre promotional strategy of saying the game stunk while providing scratch n' sniff stickers didn't exactly play out like they thought. Sure the game had it's defenders at the time, but it was mostly pushed to the wayside for a number of years. The game has everything you could possibly want; obsessive cults, zombie circus town, crooked police officers, what more could you possibly want from a video game. Earthbound has gained a cult status over the years. Leading to numerous conventions and projects. The community also translated the games sequel, Mother 3, when Nintendo was very reluctant to publish it. Grab your baseball bat and your trusty Yo-Yo, it's time to go.
Now here is a link to the G.O.T.M Art Pack™. This includes custom box art for ES/Kodi or whatever you use. A launching image for the runcommand menu, and an Overlay for in game.
Game of the Month Challenge
This months challenge is Kingly Regalia I You must find the Sword of Kings and give it to the Crown Prince of Dalaam; Poo. (Obviously this game is full of very mature humor.) Have Fun, and don't take any crap from anybody.

Man came over to the forum to get some ideas on cases and see what people were saying about the 3B+ Then i find this post and i haven't been able to put the controller down, what a fun game and a great idea. Will definitely be back again to see what other games come up!
-
Next month is 'Polybius'.
-
@mediamogul
well that was an interesting read... -
-
How's everybody doing in 'Earthbound'? I'm not participating myself, as I'm almost at the end of 'Earthbound Zero' and didn't want to jump ahead. Still, it's a remarkable game and alongside 'Chrono Trigger', stands out as a top RPG title on a system famous for it's RPG titles. I look forward to jumping into it myself and then finishing off the trilogy with the fan translated 'Mother 3'. Also, as a heads up, 'The Angry Video Game Nerd' released a video today covering 'Earthbound', but it's pretty heavy on spoilers, so viewer beware.
-
@mediamogul I decided to put the game on my modded 3ds and play it that way. I can play for about half hour on my bus ride to school, about 10 min during lunch and the ride home. While I can't play for that long, it sure beats staring out the window.
Earthbound is probably become one of my favorite games. The music is amazing (and really makes me kick myself for missing the vinyl ost release) Funny as all hell too.

@lilbud said in April 2018 - Earthbound:
it sure beats staring out the window.
I hear that was gonna be the original tag line before they settled on "This Game Stinks".
-
@mediamogul That would've been a lot better.
-
Updated to 4.4 last backup was before i started earthbound... lost all my saves very upset, haven't found the will power to start again
-
@cian where were you in the game? I got a few saves if you want one, I can also change the name if you want as well.
-
@lilbud was in saturn valle (those very odd mouse people) if you have any near there would much appreciate it. not too worried about the name of the save.
-
@cian Here is a site with a bunch of save files, mine is from twoson so it'd still be a bit of work.
-
@lilbud thanks might jump back in and embrace the grind, it really is a fantastic game!
-
And here we go again, if anybody got the sword of Kings, speak now or forever hold your peace.
Looking at you @meleu
-
@lilbud oops! I was away from here for a while! what did I miss?
suggestions for may? uhmmm... what about the hack "Metroid: Rogue Dawn"?
-
@meleu I was actually thinking of going to the one of the other 16bit consoles. Was thinking either Shinobi 3 or Bonk on PC Engine.
Because to my knowledge, no one completed the challenge for April. (Find the sword of kings in Earthbound.)
-
@lilbud Shinobi 3 for MegaDrive? It has my vote.
-
As long as suggestions are open, I'll add 'RoboCop Versus The Terminator' for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive. The SNES version chose to go with a lighter comic book presentation and the game play was monotonous, but the edgier Genesis/Megadrive version feels like the cinematic crossover that we always hoped for, both visually and in the non-stop action it provides.
-
Okay, I put it between two games. Shinobi III or Quackshot starring Donald Duck
So after using a very scientific method of choosing (flipping a quarter.) The game of the month for May will be Quackshot starring Donald Duck.
I just want to say something about the rules and the game selection. If it is up to me, I will usually choose games that have been sitting on my backlog for a while. Quackshot has been on these since easily December or January. Decided to pick a Sega game for once (THAT. WASN'T. SONIC.)
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
