So for DOS my little bro and I played Wacky Wheels shareware which I found on my local BBS because we couldnt afford a SNES when they first came out. Finally bought the full version as an adult.

Also for DOS I loved Death Gate. It's a magic user trying to click through puzzles kind of like Teen Agent(love it too!) and Journeyman Project (awesome!) but less cartoony and more in depth. I found it very challenging and fun with a simple but fun plot/story.

Not sure how popular it is or was, as I didn't own a PS1 but Tetris Plus is Soo much fun for two players and most people seem to not have heard of it. It's very casual and has Bob the Builder's brother in it as a treasure Hunter ( or that's what we call him ) who you have to help reach the bottom and not get trapped on your Tetris tiles.

        @thedatacereal Oooooh Wacky Wheels!

I wonder if that'll run on the Pi with DOSBox. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

@classicgmr It's runs fine on mine. I bought the 3D Realms anthology a long time ago which runs through dosbox so just copied the files over. No controller support that I found in the Game Options which bummed me, but didn't dig around, I was just getting all of my .sh files created.

It also comes with all of these so I am tempted to add them all:

          Arctic Adventure
          Bio Menace
          Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold
          Commander Keen: Goodbye Galaxy
Commander Keen: Invasion of the Vorticons
          Math Rescue
          Monster Bash
          Mystic Towers
          Paganitzu
          Monuments of Mars
          Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure
          Crystal Caves
          Death Rally
          Alien Carnage
          Hocus Pocus
          Major Stryker
          Blake Stone: Planet Strike
          Realms of Chaos
          Pharaoh's Tomb
          Word Rescue
          Secret Agent
          Raptor: Call of the Shadows
          Terminal Velocity
          Wacky Wheels
          Stargunner
          Shadow Warrior
          Wolfenstein 3D
Rise of the Triad: Dark War
          Duke Nukem
          Duke Nukem 2
          Duke Nukem 3D
          Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project

So I played a LOT of games on my vacation that I hadn't tried before nor heard of thanks to you all throwing games out there! Elevator Action Returns has been one of my new favorites since I booted it up. :)

This morning I had an hour to kill so I jumped into the SNES library and remembered that Populous - while not technically a "hidden gem" since it's EVERYWHERE - had an excellent port to the SNES system. The hour flew by.

@mediamogul How'd you like Pressure Cooker?

Amazonia on ps1 is a great game that I just discovered recently.

Can you provide a link to a review or something? I cannot find mention of this game anywhere. MobyGames doesn't have it listed either. Google just gives me a ton of Twisted Metal links.

EDIT: Never mind. I see your post below it that corrected the name to Amerzone - didn't see it before for some reason. Now I can go look for the game.

I can't believe the game has eluded me until now. It really is a 2600 game that has everything possible going for it. The graphics and music are among the best on the system and the game play, while extremely straightforward, has a level of complexity to it that you don't often find in 2600 games. I love 'Burgetime' and assumed going in that I would end up making a lot of comparisons between the two, but the similarities really begin and end with the underlying burger making theme. While 'Burgertime' is an excellent action platformer, 'Pressure Cooker' challenges your brain to problem solve and multitask in an extremely satisfying way. In that sense, you could say that it actually shares more in common with something like 'Tapper'. It's definitely a great game and one that I'll be going back to often from now on.

Toy Commander on Sega Dreamcast. Absolutely love that game.
Archon on C64 though I know it came out on other platforms. That was the version I loved as a kid.
                Maniac Mansion on the NES
                Faxanadu on the NES
Glory Days 2 on the nintendo DS. Similar to choplifter. Absolute gem that no one seemed to play

I absolutely concur. My grandma gave it to me for Christmas; it was my all-time-favorite for most of my C64 time.

I love poking around for random fun games to play. Recently I randomly put on Wurm: Journey to the Center of the Earth (NES) and really dug that. It's a hybrid side scrolling SHMUP, FPS, and side scrolling adventure and all three elements work.

On Genesis/ Megadrive I was always a fan of SubTerrania as a kid.

OK, i've been exploring MAME for some hidden gems, and I found this bizarre game, called "The Great Ragtime Show", it's a sidescrolling/platform-ish shooter that is just amazing to play. Give it a try, it works in MAME2003-Plus, the rom name is ragtime.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I was a massive fan of this game as a kid on the C64. To play it now on the Master System is just fantastic! It really is some very nice work indeed. :-)

@chizzer Troddlers - excellent game! Never even heard about it before but it's going in my favorites list. :)

@gomisensei - I don't have a copy that works. I'll have to hunt one down.

I play it from time to time. I think it's one of the best games for 16-Bits consoles.

@classicgmr I remember playing Buck Rodgers(?) alot and some really basic game where you had to shoot a shark that swam towards the screen. I only really used to go into arcades when my family went to seaside resorts for holidays, so I didnt get to visit them very often. :(

I am the only person who has reviewed Second Dimension RetroPak Vol. 1 on Steam. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1137930/Second_Dimension_RetroPak_Vol_1/ It is a pack of modern NES games. The emulator it is using is Mesen, but I just rename the rom files to .nes and play them how I choose. My favorite game in the pack is Perfect Pair, a Pac-man-esque game where you play as cupid, avoid enemies, and claim territory to bring a couple together. It's actually my favorite NES game now.

Admittedly, Super Mario Bros. 3, Mega Man 4, and TMNT II the Arcade Game are more substantial titles (other favorites of mine), but I'm a sucker for arcade style games these days.

@jamrom2 Nice list, I concur with at least half of it. But most of them were pretty popular, whereas this thread is about …

that gem you played that wasn't as popular, didn't draw a crowd or was just so much fun but only seemed like it was fun to you.

No offense, just a friendly reminder for everyone still reading here. 😇
