Do you live near Brighton? Do you play games? For money???
-
So I was browsing (honestly boss) just to see what’s out there, and came across this job. How could i resist? So of course the people I thought might appreciate it most reside here.
Get paid to play? Must be a scam!!) Of course I signed up at once! -
I don't think it's a scam, but rather a "playtesting for hire" thing. You're paid to test, companies pay this intermediate for the tests.
Playtesting isn't especially... fun, but can't hurt to try for 1h or so and see how it goes, if you live near there and it interests you.

Playtesting is a real thing and like most real things not nearly as great as it may sound.
Are you playing a game? yes, technically but you are playing a specific section of a game and looking for specific details, certain bugs and glitches and then you are filling a report on them.
Did you ever have to watch a section of a movie in a class and think "Great we get to watch a movie!". But then it is not a movie you might want to watch and you are not watching the whole thing just a section AND then the teacher gives you a form of questions or things you have to look for so that though you are technically "watching" a movie you are working much more than you expected you would be and not getting nearly the "fun" you thought?
Ya, play testing is that and normally for minimum wage because "hey, who doesn't want to get paid to play video games?" (but not really).
I feel confident saying with no proof; No-one has made a successful living as a play tester. So if your expecting this to be the dream career, I have bad news for you.
Other side of the coin it is an experience and gives great insight into the inner workings of corporate life and what the bottom rug will feel like.
Last despairing story. A friend got a job at a movie theater. She thought this is great because she loves movies and popcorn... She no longer will eat popcorn and can barely stand the smell of it. What you do for work you will often stop doing for fun.
Now I am off to tell children that rainbows are just the scattered remains of light that was torn asunder by an uncaring barrage of water droplets. Evil Eeyore out

@lurker average salary over $32,000 a year and salaries up to almost $200,000 a year sounds like a successful living to me...

I challenge.
As a Play tester? Not someone who manages play testers or other corporate position in a play testing company, but as the lowly play tester grunt its self? I think that figure is including the CEO's salary in the employees can make statement.
BUT Since I said in my statement "I feel confident saying with no proof" I will, if you are confident, also accept your statement equally with no proof and retract my claim.
I would instead like to submit my application for the $200,00 position. Hell I'll take $150,000 if I can work remotely and stay in the U.S.

@lurker thats not the starting salary. You have to earn that. Google is your friend. I had no issues finding proof of the salaries.

Average salary in the US: 22K, high at 32K
https://www.glassdoor.com/Salaries/game-tester-salary-SRCH_KO0,11.htmVideo game tester salaries start around USD $18,000 and top out around $55,000 annually for experienced lead testers.

Sounds about right. Beats flipping burgers and stacking shelves for sure, but you won't be buying houses and such.
The job in the OP seems legit, but it's just part-time, as in "we call you once in a week/month". Probably month. 30 pounds p/h for playing a game is not a bad gig though, so why not.

Keywords Studios recently acquired the company I work for.
My company does play testing and general hardware/certification testing.
Keywords has also been buying out a bunch of game development/testing companies, they have a headquarters in Ireland but have a bunch of different offices all across the world. So if you have a pretty free schedule, play testing can be a good way to make some money on the side.

I didn’t doubt it was real, there are lots of game devs in Brighton, so I was a bit tongue in cheek:) It’s one of those “too good to be true” things but hey- if I can squeeze in an hour or two it could be interesting.

@youxia this survey states that men make an average of 48,000 and females make an average of 62,000 a year.

@edmaul69 I'm not sure how they arrived at those "average" figures since they also mention that those below 6 years of experience earn much less. I also suspect QA Tester might be a different position than Game Tester.
The first 4 links I looked at averaged somewhere between 20-30k (Glassdoor has 2017 data) which is, let's face it, much, much more realistic. Do you really think game testers get paid as much as highly qualified professionals from other walks of life?
That besides the fact it's all nowhere near the 200k figure mentioned earlier.
