Emulation Station detects my xbox 360 game controller but I cannot even map it
-
So I just got a Raspberry Pi 3 and have Rasbian Stretch and installed Retropie over that which also got Emulation Station. So far so good and I can get to everything fine. I tried the xboxdrv driver and it doesn't even detect my controller... BOOO. So then I read I can use the xpad driver so I install that restart load emulation station and now it finally detects two gamepads. So I press the middle button on the controller with the xbox logo to power on the controller but the light just keeps flashing, On a xbox 360 it would normally go from 4 lights to 1 and whatever light is your player number. It keeps flashing all 4 lights like it is trying to do something. Anyway the Dialog tells me to hold down A button. I hold down A and nothing happens. Yet I can map my keyboard fine.
-
@retrogamer29 Uninstall the
xboxdrv
driver and reboot, then try to set up your gamepad. Do you have 1 controller or 2 controllers connected ? -
@retrogamer29 You need to specify how you connect the controller, USB or dongle
-
I have just one xbox 360 controller and I am using usb. I have a logitech bluetooth keyboard and mouse combo that is going fine. Just cannot get the xbox 360 controller working at all. I can map the keyboard but not the xbox 360 Controller.
-
If I uninstall the xboxdrv and restart then I get no gamepads detected yet holding down a key on the keyboard it detects it I can still map my keyboard however nothing has changed with the xbox 360 controller. Its still a plugged in brick.
-
@retrogamer29 Can you run the following commands and post the output
lsusb dmesg | grep -i xbox dmesg | grep -i xpad
Exit emulationstation and type the commands above at the command prompt.
EDIT: forget to say about checking the obvious things - is the USB dongle connected properly ? Is the controller functional - i.e. have you tested on a PC/console ?
-
@mitu Ill give that a try. Im sure it is connected properly. It works fine on my xbox 360 using the same cable and on my windows 10 PC.
Edit:
Exiting Emulation Station and running lsusb show the followingBus 001 Device 005 ID: 046d:c52b logitech, Inc. Unifying Device
Bus 001 Device 004 ID: 045e:020f Microsoft Corp. Xbox360 Wireless Controller

Bus 001 Device 001 ID: 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hubRunning the dmesg | grep -i xbox won't work because for some reason the | key is tilde for some reason. Pressed a bunch of other keys but can't seem to find whatever | is mapped to.
-
@retrogamer29 Change the keyboard layout to US (via
raspi-config
) and you'll be able to use the '|' key. -
So now I have remapped the keyboard to US for some reason it was set to afghani and then tried dmesg | grep -i xbox and pressed enter and nothing happens. Then did the other dmesg | grep -i xpad and nothing happens. By that I mean you press enter and absolutely nothing comes up.
-
@retrogamer29 If the
dmesg | grep xpad
command doesn't produce anything, then it means thexpad
driver is not loading. Make sure thexpad
driver is installed then plug in the controller again. Is this a Microsoft OEM controller or a clone ? -
@mitu This is a real microsoft xbox 360 controller with its play and charge kit. How do I install the driver?
-
-
I did that weird that nothing comes up. It says it is installed but I will restart. Go to retropie. go to retropie setup go to manage packages and driver packages and uninstall reboot and do the same go back reinstall and reboot and see if that works.
-
@retrogamer29 If it appears as installed, but the
xpad
driver is not loaded, then the controller is not recognized as a gamepad. Can you runcat /proc/bus/usb/devices
and post the output here ? -
@mitu I get cat: /proc/bus/usb/devices: No such file or directory
-
@retrogamer29 Sorry, it's
cat /proc/bus/input/devices
. -
@mitu Well it just states my logitech keyboard. I don't see the Xbox 360 controller there. Its also a lot to write out as its on my TV.
-
@retrogamer29 Run it as
cat /proc/bus/input/devices > /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/out.txt
, then browse over file shares at\\retropie\roms
and get theout.txt
file. If the controller doesn't appear in the list, then runlsusb -v > /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/lsusb.txt
and the - similarly, from the
roms
folder - get the contents of thelsusb.txt
file and post it here. -

Hm, according to the
xpad
driver's source, the device should be recognized as a controller (ID 045e:028f), but it's not. The last listing fromlsusb -v
it's not the same as the previous one:Bus 001 Device 004 ID: 045e:020f Microsoft Corp. Xbox360 Wireless Controller
but I assume it was just a typo.
Can you exit Es, disconnect the dongle and then type
sudo dmesg -c > /dev/null sudo modprobe xpad
then connect the dongle back, type
emulationstation
and try configuring the controller.
