TurboGrafx 16 turbo select

I'm trying to play some of the old TurboGraphx 16 games. My problem is the default controller setup doesn't seem to allow for the turbo select buttons which are vital for some games. I'm using a SNES generic controller and noticed the basics functions work fine. If I hit the left shoulder button it switches to a 6-button mode and the turbo selection defaults to what I need but the D-pad becomes unusable. Anyway I'm looking to set up a specific button config for the TurboGraphx 16(PCEngine) emeulator but can't find and information on how to get started.

How can I find out how the buttons I have are named and what each emulator expects for buttons so that I can make proper translations? I'm not sure where to find how that left trigger switches to this 6 button mode. Perhaps this would illuminate the situation but I'm not sure where to find this either. If this requires driver changes I could do that but I'm not sure where to start.
