Looking for testers - Backup Feature
-
So as I couldn't just rename my previous post I will make a new post looking for Testers...
The original post is https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/1898/system-backup-and-restore-idea-and-project/
The code is in beta stage now with successful back up locally.
Stage: Beta
Version: 0.4bInstructions:
-
Make a Backup Directory in the /home/RetroPie folder (this will make the back up visible on any Windows Network)
-
Place the Files in the /home/pi directory for ease of executing the script
-
in command line open and edit the file config.cfg or open it in a text editor
-
put in the files you want to back up seperated by a space. use the full path
-
put in the destination you want the backup to be saved
-
save and exit the config file
-
Run the script by putting in "/bin/bash rpibu_001.sh"
It may seem like it hangs if its a large back up
once it says backup complete, you are all done
To do:
-Test local Network backup
-Test USB back up
-Make RetroPie Menu option for it
-show backup progressKnown Bugs:
-script has to run with /bin/bash in front or else you will get a command not found error. -
-
@administrators can any of you help on the adding to the menu part.... can I just use a simple Bash script or could i end up in the same issue with this script?
I would also welcome Retropie dev to test if not busy
-
Github with the files
https://github.com/Drakaen391/rpibu
Need both config.cfg and rpibu_001.sh together for it to work as well as in the same folder
-
Has anyone tried this script? And if so any feedback?
-
I'm wondering why you'd need to back up your RetroPie?
When I built and finished mine I took a copy of the entire microsd card in case a bad power down corrupted it or something, but nothing ever changes on there that makes me want to take a regular backup.
Or does it?? Am I missing something critical here??

It's for upgrades and that type of deal especially for Windows users who can not access the backend without extra software on their PC...
This once ready will be set to compile the most often configured files into a single backup that will either be retrievable on any operating system via the microSD or Windows network... Or if the user wants it will send the files directly to a back up location...
A backup of the entire SD isn't even possible on Windows PCIt can be good for the novice user though to also back up in case of curroption...
-
The expected final default Back up items will be
ROM folder
BIOS folder
Config folder
Emulationstation game lists
Scrapped files
autoconfig file
Config file from boot partition (if I can get success on it)
System configuration files...Each in the exact same file structure as it sits on the SD card
This will allow customized builds to upgrade easier
