Is there a general solution (irrespective of the rom)?
If bezels / overlays work well in Retropie / MAME widescreen is there a systemwide setting to make them work in 4:3? As a quick and dirty solution - how can I just get rid off all the bezel artwork so I can see the full game (I know I will have black bars on the side): where are they stored so I can just rename the folder for now (so "hide" them from MAME)?

@Gadgetguy Download the image from retropie.org.uk/download and install anew. There will be no bezels/borders.

@mitu Thank you, this is a great suggestion. Will all the other aspects of the rom kept intact? I want to get rid of the bezels, but want to keep everything else exactly as is: will that be the case if I install new?

@Gadgetguy The RetroPie image does not come with any ROMs.

@mitu Thank you. Yes, I am aware. That is why I wanted to use the rom I have downloaded (which does come with a good collection of games etc.) and just remove the bezel/overlay data so I can see the whole game. So if I knew where the bezel data is stored - all I would have to do is delete those files and I should be ok. But I do not know where that is stored...

Nobody wants to waste time troubleshooting a 3rd party image that is being distributed without permission.

Noted - was not aware that one needs to get permission (from who?)
On a different note - I found my answer: I just had to switch overlays off in retropie. Did not know there was such an option, now I do. This removed the bezel and now the fit is perfect.

That you would need to get permission to re-release software that was made by someone else would seem like common sense to me

Look, Im not trying to be a jerk here so dont take it that way. But 3rd party images (images not distributed by the RetroPie team) are usually a hot mess of issues because nobody knows whats been done to the image but the person who is distributing it. They are very hard to troubleshoot and there is no enthusiasm for it because they are being released without permission and quite often with roms included. These images put the RetroPie project in jeopardy because then people directly associate retropie with illegal rom distribution. There is a reason its against the rules to discuss romsites on this forum.
