"oh no, my ROMs in (insert your emulator here, probably FBAlpha/FBNeo) isn't working after that update. How can I undo that?" - lots of people.
My idea: lock protections on RetroPie Setup.
Do you wanna be the cool guy who experiments every cool thing updating everything on your system, except THAT one? I know, you want some safe bet. Just put a padlock and be happy. Now you will never ever have to search new sets of ROMs.
Is this possible? I don't know.
Can I do it? No.
What do you think about it? -

Backups are way easier if you're worried for such things. If you don't want to update an emulator, then you have the option to update only certain packages.

@mitu
After some time thinking about it, I did choose my words poorly.
Instead of choosing one by one, you would gain time choosing to start and going out to grab something to eat or go to a movie or wherever, you get it.
But I understand you, and messing around on this files maybe would create some bugs...
