Setting up Half-Life through RetroPie (A Guide)

I've corrected the name trouble, but it still says I don't have permissions to add the "valve" folder to the "Half-Life" folder.

@chwilson1999 Reset the ROMs folder permissions - see https://retropie.org.uk/docs/FAQ/#reset-ownershippermissions-of-homepiretropie-roms - and re-try.

I need help with the step 4 to a pi3 or pi3b+ :
./waf configure -T release --prefix=/path/to/any/output/directory

1 What is the correct output directory ?
2 once compiled, which files should be copied to / home / pi / RetroPie / roms / ports / Half-Life?

Hello again: in pi3b + with the previous version point 1 (sergiopoverony / xash3d) it works, when it got to point 4 of the tutorial (link to the xash3d-fwgs repository) I can't understand if the repository is only for pi4 or if the binaries you uploaded to mega are only to pi4.
In pi3b + I made several attempts to compile the repository, I compiled fine or so I think, but they were unsuccessful, after copying the necessary binaries, game files and assigning the permissions correctly, it starts black screen and returns to the emulationstation, can someone tell me if it works on pi3 or pi3b +?
Any ideas?

@kactius the binaries I posted are for the pi 4 only. You'll need to manually build the newer version of xash3d if you want to use it with a pi 3. Or just skip that step and use the older one that is build by the script.

Hi guys, I've tried to set this up this morning, following the guide in the first post. The pott compiled without any issues, I put my valve directory in the indicated place, tried to launch xash3d.sh and got booted back to ES.

My log is pretty short :

Parameters:
Executing: /opt/retropie/ports/xash3d/Xash3d.sh
/opt/retropie/ports/xash3d/Xash3d.sh: line1: /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/ports/Half-Life/xash3d: Permission denied

I feel like this is probably a fairly easy problem to solve, but I don't know how to go about it.
I'd appreciate any help.

What are the permissions on the folder? Is it going to be linked to that?

My folder is set to "0755".

Cool, I am sure Quicksilver will be able to help. It just so explicitly says permission, that I thought it was worth checking.

I'm getting close.

I tried the version of xash3d-fwgs on RetroPie-extra as I wasn't getting anywhere with this one.

It almost boots but there's an issue.

I can see my mouse cursor in the corner for a few seconds before it boots me back to ES.
I had a similar problem with iortcw and I'd solved it when I realized the logs indicated the .so files should be in the config folder. That did not work here.

@quicksilver Thank you so much for this amazing guide! When I read this I about jumped out of my seat with excitement!

So, I have followed the steps in your post. I have the Steam version of HL, and have copied over just the VALVE folder.

The game does run! However I am getting interesting logging information in the upper left corner as textures are being loaded?? Also how can I shut off the FPS indication in the upper right?

@quicksilver im having problems, i make it works, all ok but gamepad only moves, i cant jump, or shoot and if i try to configure in main menu, game exits.

@soulrider911 see step three in my original post. I cover how to turn off the console notifications. I believe the fps counter option is turned off in the config.cfg in the valve folder.

@Codafire try using the binary that I compiled in my original post. It is more recent and less buggy than the one included with the script.

Sounds like a permissions or ownership issue. Check to make sure the half-life folder is owned by user pi and has proper permissions.

If you mean I didnt log in properly, I did it as pi user. But the files say in properties that they are from "root [0]". I also cant change them because of "permission denied"

I'm having difficulty in step 3:

If you wish to use a controller to play this game edit the file /opt/retropie/ports/xash3d/Xash3D.sh and add -sdl_joy_old_api to the end of the line. You can also remove -console from that line if you don't want the constant console messages on screen.

I can't find ports/xash3d, I only see ports/Half-Life. For some reason Xash3D.sh is inside ports.
I tried to edit Xash3D.sh by adding -sdl_joy_old_api. It looked like this:

"/opt/retropie/supplementary/runcommand/runcommand.sh" 0 PORT "Xash3D" "" -sdl_joy_old_api

But it did not work, the control still does not respond.
