Upcoming RA 1.90: Loading Screens
-
FYI:
the upcoming Retroarch 1.9 will offer loading screens, also widget-based.
Seems to be very nice, have a look here: https://www.libretro.com/index.php/category/blog/ -
@sirhenrythe5th actually it's there already if you update RA from sources, however i think the feature is tightly related to "retroarch-database", which is probably not something installed on retropie (it's the database used for generating game lists and such, but retropie uses emulationstation instead)

Great news! (I hope.)
As nice as it is to have it at all, RetroPie's launching artwork always nagged me by pausing the loading process without any way to end it prematurely by pressing a button. My own attempts to decouple them from runcommand weren't crowned with success, and @johnodon's solution is elegant, but rather complicated. It would be nice to have a simple native RA function for that.

Retroarch 1.90 is out!
And it has another goodie for cheevos: an optional soundfile can be choosen to play when unlocking an achievement.
I guess i will take the PS-Trophy-Sound as i am used to it and heard it thousand of times before :D

Here's the announcement for anyone interested in the details:
https://www.libretro.com/index.php/retroarch-1-9-0-released/I like two little details in particular: That the cursor isn't reset to the first entry of a submenu every time that you return to it (this annoys me soo much), and the selectible notifications of several types, as I usually only care for some of them.
The reduced memory footprint and I/O overhead sound good, too.

Dredging this topic back up since I haven't messed with this yet...
Can you use only canned loading animations or is it customizable?
EDIT: Let me qualify my question a bit more...
- Can you specify your own loading image/animation?
- Is there an option to display it for a certain period of time? This may seem like a weird ask...but...on faster x86 systems, the loading screen may be displayed for like a second which just seems silly.
