Can I use retropie to do the keymapping of a pg gaming controller?

Hello, I have a project in which I need to control the expressions on the face of a character. It's a robot and its face is a led screen connected to a raspberry which connects to a pc via bluetooth, so the different expressions are jpg images and gifs or .web or whatever works best. And those images must be controlled through a gaming controller (joystick to the right means the image of a sad face, joystick to the lefs means a happy face, b button means angry... you get the point). So I was wondering if there's a way that I could use retropie to do that. Does anybody know??
