Famicom Box Covers for Frontends
-
TLDR: I have restored over 300 images to recreate Famicom boxes and they're here for anyone who wants to use in their Retropie build. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/dw5qakfkgdl5x6m/AABrRb4ZssUPIXF7hdjqSJ84a?dl=0
While the NES gets a lot of love, I don't think the Famicom gets enough love and it's reflected on how hard it is to find proper covers to use with frontends.
So, I decided to restore/recreate original covers and I've been looking all over the internet for images that could be used for this purpose and I've been working on them almost non-stop for over a month during my free time. So here's my approach this project:
- Accuracy first and foremost. I aimed to have the covers looking as close as they should be to the originals (colors, aspect ratio, original art and so on)
- I have recreated a lot of assets and I have hand drawn many missing bits when needed
- Aim for the overall best final result possible using a large number of techniques in Photoshop
- I've excluded games that require peripherals such as light guns or exercise mats
- I've excluded games programmed by Western companies
- I've excluded mahjong and pachinko games
Currently, there are 323 game covers on my Dropbox folder and I hope you guys like what's been done so far.
Also, currently there are 569 missing games, and they are listed on at text file in the same folder, so if you have means to send me high resolution photos (taken from your phone, even) of those games, I'd be really grateful.Notes:
- Naming convention follows No-Intro, so there's probably some misnamed games
- I really need photos for the missing games, so please let me know if you have Famicom games that you can send me pictures of
- I should update the folder in a month or so if I manage to find more pictures
-
@RetroNerdman this is fantastic, thank you so much for your effort. I will be going through my collection and completing some missing artwork.

@RetroNerdman They look great, thank you very much!

Update time!
I needed something to celebrate, so I pushed to have a reasonable update this weekend.
Same link as before, but if you downloaded the previous files, please delete and redownload the newer ones. I found some mistakes in a few covers. And I also found some images that I didn't work as well as I could have. Mistakes tend to happen when you're sleep deprived. There's no changelog, but we now have 459 cover arts! And I've added and removed a few games from the list, as I'm sticking to my personal rule of only work on games made by Japanese devs (as I prefer to have the USA releases for American devs - not to mention to keep the amount of images to find and work on as low as possible).
I'll update this post later this week with some before/after images.
-
Another update!
I've restored/recreated 860 Famicom covers!
The link to Dropbox is the same as the one in the first post.
I didn't create a before/after comparison because after half an hour working on it, I decided it would be better if I spent my time working on the covers themselves.
I hope your Retropie build looks betters with these uploads. -
Final update!
After countless hours, the final update is here!
There are 955 Famicom covers to be used with your frontend of choice (which I am assuming to be Retropie for obvious reasons).
You can get the Zip file here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/is2fp6d0xlhv094/FamicomCovers.zip?dl=0
I hope that, for those interested in the console, my time has been dedicated to something you gonna enjoy. Most covers could use better images and I'm quite aware that some covers don't look particularly good, but none of them look offensively bad.
However I've added a list of games that I need better images to work with, so if you have them and can send me high resolution photos or scans, please do so. Some of these games are particularly rare, so even digging through Yahoo Auctions and Mercari I couldn't find them.Anyway, that's it for this thread.
