I am thinking of a gameboy advance shell pi zero build. For the folks who have done them in the past, what would be the advantage of leveraging the freeplay board vs building it myself. I was thinking of just having the a, b buttons plus the shoulders and want a nice clean look on the shell without open holes.

      Any advice is welcome.

@cnoto I have the freeplay board in my GBA buid. The nice part is the board is designed to fit into a GBA shell with some mild modification. Also it has all that you need to get the Pi running, like a built in audio amplifier, game controller built in, battery charging and power controller built in, smart power button, Video out and a screen that just slides right in. All of these circuits that you would have to build yourself and fit into a GBA shell. It is possible if you have the patience. The only issue I have (other than the pi zero being not very powerful) is that it uses HDMI over GPIO. While it works, it leads to screen tearing as the pi just can push the bandwidth of HDMI over its GPIO. But as a project that will take a few hours to put together, and fun to play, it good.

@lostless Thanks. I am thinking of cutting an old gba cartridge to fill the space left at the top.
