Autostart last emulator
-
Since the Raspberry Pi 400 came out yesterday, a lot of folks are going to build an all-in-one multi-system home computer with it. The approach is different here, you usually don't start a game directly, but boot into the emulator to let the emulated system boot.
So I suggest an option that, before emulationstation starts, starts into the emulator that was last selected when booting the Pi, maybe after some timeout. -
If you'd like this you can "easily" edit the launch script for yourself to launch your preferred emulator directly. Then if you still want ES to run you can use the "runcommand-onend". Maybe I'm not clear on what you are intending.

I find it easier to set EmulationStation to start on the Last Played collection. If you want to start the last played game, it's just a button press away.

This looks like a feasible option. I expect my Pi400 to arrive later this day so I'll try this immediately.
