N64 player 2 sometimes disconnects

Hi all,
Me and my 3 year old son are very happy with retropie on my pi3. But I have a problem with Mario Kart N64. I have 2 original PS3 controllers with extension usb cables connected. They work great in the snes and nes emulators but with mario kart 64 sometimes the player 2 controller stops functioning. For example when I play 2 player grand prix. Everything works fine but on the last race player 2 controller stops working. I have to exit the emulator and press de ps button again and than it starts working. I also have a Rii I8+ keyboard connected to the pi3.
