      Hi everyone,

I was wondering, I've seen a lot of commits in the last year on the Retropie github, and a good number gradually increased the version number. As a result I was wondering if there is a roadmap or prepared plan for 4.9 or if it will happen organically.

Basically the reason I'm waiting for 4.9 is I'd like an official premade images with a 64-bit OS as a base. Now I know for most people it won't change much (especially considering for my use case it's for the Pi 4) but when running tests with the setup script, I was able to run a pretty good number of Windows games and x86/x64 Linux games through box86/box64 with excellent performance. Of course you're not gonna run anything 3D or even anything 2D that's a bit hungry, but I had good luck with Gungeon (when it did ran, it had issues back when I tried, fixed now afaik), FEZ, Owlboy or even Tricky Towers and a few more. Sadly a few of the games only run on 64-bit hardware, which means I have to run it through box64, only available (for obvious reasons) on 64 bit arm hardware.

For my main Pi for myself it's fine, but I'm also maintaining one for my nephews and would like to add those games on there. The thing is theirs is meant to be a no-hassle no-breakage build, meaning the official prebuilts are ideal with easy-to-setup splash screen, no easy access to the terminal, easy blocking of advanced settings and so on. While trying to achieve the same results with just the setup script on a Raspbian I've always run into trouble like inconsistent splash screen, terminal locking up in situations it wouldn't on the official images and so on.

Obviously I'm not "asking" for 4.9 ! I know how hard it is to maintain a project like that, let alone make sure no unexpected issues pop-up when making major changes (like the OS and 64 bit transition in this case). It's just I've seen basically nothing talke about this and was curious about it as I was thinking about making that update again recently.

If there are any priority tasks for this, please do tell, I might not be able to help but I could. I'm a dev, while Linux and Raspberry hardware are not my specialty I've dabbled a little when toying with those builds and IF I can help I most definitely will, if I can't, then I'll just wait for 4.9. In all cases the many commits I've seen are exciting (haven't even had a chance to give GZDoom a shot, and I can't wait, but there's plenty other exciting stuff).

Thanks in advance everyone and have a great day ;)

Version numbering bump happens organically and it's not usually planned ahead.

As for a new image - I don't know whether one will appear soon, but the image is produced by running the setup script on an clean RaspiOS Lite image, so if you already have done that, there's nothing that will be added by a new image - everything that's installed and configured is in the repository.

Right, as @mitu stated, you can roll your own image. I have been down that road a few months ago:
