Pixel Theme

@r0ckarong Did you get a chance to fix the image yet?
EDIT: I was bored/impatient so I just did it myself...

This is my favorite theme. It's the only one in my cabinet. It fits perfectly :D
But it doesn't seem to be updated by its main developer, @Rookervik , lately :( Speaking of Pull Request, at least.I've took the liberty to fork Pixel theme and fix all the open Pull Requests.
- Remove -Metadata from title (readme.md) from @movisman
- Fix for image remaining under video during playback from @movisman
- Missing Angle Bracket causing XML parse to fail. from @Zenjiro
- Fixed comment tags. from @meleu
- using "x" rather than " × " from @meleu
- Use '&' rather than '&' from @meleu
Actually some of them were actually in the main repository.
I've also formatted all the
xml
, removedpixel - copia.xml
and fixed a couple typos. If you'd like to use it, here's the repo: https://github.com/hiulit/es-theme-pixel
Installation
First of all, backup the Pixel theme.
Go to
/etc/emulationstation/themes
and copy thepixel
folder to another folder, for example. Now, open the terminal and enter:
cd /etc/emulationstation/themes sudo rm -rf pixel git clone https://github.com/hiulit/es-theme-pixel pixel
And... you're good to go!
A part from that, and a little off-topic, I saw that in the
README.md
it says:Do not modify this theme or use graphics in other projects.
and in the
readme.txt
:License
=======
DO NOT modify this theme or use any assets in other themes or projects.Does this mean that I'm not able to do what I've just done?
Because I also saw in the
pixel.xml
:license: creative commons CC-BY-NC-SA
Isn't that contradictory?
I mean, I'm not against @Rookervik not wanting anybody to modify the theme, but this type of Creative Commons license permits it, right?Anyway, I want to say that I really love this theme and that I really appreciate the time @Rookervik spent on it! :D
-
Yeah, you're going against his wishes at least from what that's stating. Unless he's given you explicit permission to do this.
-
@sgtjimmyrustles He hasn't. But what I've done it's only fixing xml tags and such, I haven't touch any of his art: logos, backgrounds, etc. I haven't even moved a thing. Everything is exactly the same, looks-wise.
-
@hiulit
What I'd recommend is speaking with him on the IRC. He's still there (Spoke with him yesterday), so that might help clear things up. But by technicality of modifying the xml stuff, you're modifying a theme. I'm not being a jerk about this either, just stating my interpretation of what you've done and what the readme license said. -
@sgtjimmyrustles Yeah, no worries. Didn't think you were being a jerk ;) But there's also this Creative Commons license in the pixel.xml, so it conflicts with the "no modification" in the readme... Anyway, I'll gladly try to talk to him on the IRC, but how can I do that? :P I mean, is there's a RetroPie channel?
-
Yeah, it's on freenode. #retropie
-
Oi, long time no see. Work sucks.
Yeah I don't use the Github resources or pay any attention to "pull requests." I just created a github for my themes because that's what was required for retropie users to download them onto their pi.
I already fixed the image behind the video problems. I intentionally did not change the XML to fit some of the parsers since that's a quick tool to use my art in other projects.
There haven't been any new systems added to Retropie to my knowledge so I haven't been hanging out in the forums every day to check for any new bugs. I idle around in IRC but my internet connection stability has been so poor lately that I don't want to flood the channel with disconnect/reconnect messages.
-
Pixel theme should already have recent/faves/all. I should have some screenshots up above.
It's possible I forgot to update on github. I'll see about it later.
-
@rookervik whoa... that's new, this looks like a completely new theme!
-
Nah I just moved the carousel down like I wanted to do for years. And moved the art up so you could actually see it. The theme should have looked like this for months.
-
And I don't even use regular pixel anymore. Haha. I've been using Pixel 2 for months. Love the big box art.
Don't fully like the system select yet so I haven't released it. Making some edits... slowly.
Probably change it more like original pixel on the background part. But I have made so many changes over the months that I haven't bothered posting them.
Then there's the whole updating all the consoles to 16 bit graphics instead of 8-bit. That's going to take forever and I'm not looking forward to it. Haha.
-
So when is this pixel 2 coming out?
-
@rookervik Looking forward to Pixel 2.
If you have the time, would it be possible to have non-color Neo Geo Pocket and WonderSwan pixel art in Pixel 2 instead of their Color variants being reused like in Pixel. I'd be happy with just the color being altered to a mix of black and grey for Neo Geo Pocket and mix of black and white for WonderSwan, with nothing else changed; that grill pattern on the Neo Geo Pocket for example doesn't even seem possible to me for this art style.
Anyway, thanks again for the awesome Pixel theme as well as the accompanying launching images and RetroPie system's icons.
-
@Rookervik Thanks a LOT for this awesome theme
Im a non-pi user too because of the more powerful emulators in x86.
Is there any chance we get PS3, 3DS and WiiU logos and consoles images on Pixel/Pixel2?, Im not good at pixel art or I would try it myself.
Thanks in advance mate, really appreciated -
-
@sgtjimmyrustles
looking forward too -
Got a lot of projects, plus work. Taking forever. Haha. Need to shade it.
-
Just in case anyone is interested, I've created a script to install/uninstall Pixel theme extras (Retropie menu icons, boot splashscreen and launching images).
It basically makes the task of copying the files less tedious :)
Hope you enjoy it.
You can find more info here https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/18870/script-emulationstation-s-pixel-theme-extras
