Video Previews Drag in EmulationStation
-
I have been working with both the CRT and Carbon Themes with video preview. I am using 30 second videos in .mp4 format. About 25% of the videos, mostly videos with a lot of action rendering will drag or be green. Any ideas on what setting to adjust to increase the video rendering in the emulation station previews?

@TMNTturtlguy The current player (VLC) is not hardware accelerated, so the video previews will only really work well on low resolution, low fps videos.
Specifically, what I've found would work best would be 480x360 videos, 30fps max. And even so, after a while the Pi will overheat.
You may be interested in trying out the experimental builds with OMX Player, namely the one I've put together recently based on @fieldofcows 's work.
It'll work well with higher resolution videos. OMX Player just doesn't support overlays on top of the videos - so I suspect that the CRT theme might be missing a bit of its flavor. I use Carbon, and it works fine.

@pjft Thanks for the info, i was assuming that was the case. I have been reading your work and was thinking about trying it out. I have 2 builds, one I can experiment on, the other for my brothers arcade machine in an arcade room. The one in the arcade room I want to be stable as i won't have access to fix it, that's why i don't attract mode or your build on it. I haven't noticed the pi overheating yet, i assume it will only overheat if you stay in the game list with the previews running? Thanks again

@TMNTturtlguy You're right.
In that case, my best advice is to do what I had done before I started this and fieldofcows added the OMXPlayer experiment, which is to batch convert all videos to 480x360@30fps using Handbrake or equivalent.
Works like a charm! :)
You may save yourself some time if you can somehow know beforehand which of your videos are of higher resolution, or higher fps so you don't convert all.
A note: obviously I'm biased, but I've been using my build as the main ES for the past few weeks with no real issues, so I'd be the first to recommend it :D But yes, of course there may be unforeseen problems, though it's mostly fieldofcows' code - just a few tweaks on top. If you do test it out, let us all know! Just don't use themes with overlays with the experimental player, as it doesn't support overlays on top, if that's a problem for you. :)
Best!
