off topic on topic, do you have a heatsink on your pi?
Samsung Evo+ microSD comes out, various reviews on the web, as being one of the fastest. It also very competitive in terms of price.
Edit: I use them both for DSLR and Retropie. -

Having a Pi3 and a "dogbone" open case, no need for heatsink.
Of course I don't do any overclocking. -
@udb23 i only use samsung evo's on my pi's. Best cards by a mile.
-
A slow sd card might cause pauses, not frame skips. A voltage/Temp icon on upper right can cause frameskips.
-
@edmaul69 yes i got heatsink i also got a small fan that came with the rpi case that i hooked up to gpio its Just a small 5v fan to keep it cool..
Also
So a sd card does not rly make a game thats choppy to playable?
Because Edmaul has the same pi as mine @stock speeds and hes getting better results no choppy was but then again he has a good SD card not me.
So idk if i should buy one if i wont see difference i wont.. -
Depends which emulator. some emulators like PPSSPP may be faster since due to doing IO during emulation etc.
But a good sd card is recommended for overall system IO performance.
-
You should get a Class 10 Samsung, SanDisk, or Kingston microSD card, those are generally the good brands of microSD cards. Try to find a high capacity version on sale, because they are usually expensive at regular price.
-
@pokeengineer Will i see a difference ingame performance tho? Going from crappy to good SD card?
-
@retrofreak89 generally no. But updating etc is painful on slow sdcards.
-
@retrofreak89 yeah i dont know if zdoom does i/o while playing but i would guess it does due to size of many wad files. And i know dosbox does. I had issues with running dos games on my hard drive because they ran slower than on my sd card. This was before i used a self powered usb hub, so i am not sure if it is still a speed issue with a powered hub.
-
@buzz well damn i just bought a Samsung EVO plus 32gb thinking it Will help with an issue i got.
I wont be able to test it till tomorrow when i can out a image on it but darn do its not gonna smooth a game out for me? Thing is the same game runs alot better one some one else pi with the same hardware but a better SD card i got a bad card i thought thats why it had lower frames now im not so sure anymore -
@retrofreak89 I got a Samsung EVO like in this pic: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71KewFMEvqL.SL1500.jpg
It goes perfectly. The games I tried with another class 10 micro sd card (a Verbatim one that's not U1) and they run slower. The Raspberry with Retropie shows the lighting bolt in the right upper corner. When I started using the Samsung micro sd I noticed it loaded the games faster, no lag at all and also with the filters at full resolution, even, it runs OK.
-
It should help a little bit.

Ok i just got home from my brother's house because i dont have a computer so i had to use his to put the image on the new SD card i just got back so i still got lots of stuff i need to transfer over but i Will report back if the new sd card fixes my issues that i had with the crappy no name SD card..(well it did have a name but i cant find anything online about it the name was SOS solutions 8gb class 10)
I hope it does otherwise it be a waste because the no name one was alright i guess never had issue rly exept for Zdoom being a bit choppy when its not soposed to ( runs better on some elses pi) so maybe this will help.
Its a Samsung EVO+ 32gb dont remember if i mention what card it was there was a 64gb version for not much more but ive read online that the 32fb one perform the fastest of all the EVO + and besides i think 32gb is enough for just Zdoom, kodi and snes, nes,Sega and some psx. -
@retrofreak89 i use a 1tb hard drive so my 64gb samsung evo is just full of zdoom and dosbox games.
-
@edmaul69 since we are talking about dosbox now how does it perform? I heard dosbox runs terrible like the older elder scrolls game wont run on it very laggy even tho the pi specs is plenty for that game its because of the emulation so the games that do run are limited?
But damn 64gb full of Zdoom and most of it runs good?
Also why 1tb? Youll never fill it with the little ROM and wad sizes..I rly hope this new SD card fixes my choppy issue in Valiant you dont seem to have this issue so i hope its now resolved for me too..
Im transfering over all my Wads right now as we speak :P takes a bit tho sending it over network from my phone. -
@retrofreak89 im not sure about elder scrolls games. But i dont really have a whole lot of issues with the 200+ games i have on it. Duke nukem 3d i havent played long enough to see if it gets laggy with a bunch of baddies on the screen.
-
@edmaul69
Hmm what are some of your dosbox fav i could check out? Also damn i just had a talk with a guy at Reddit and he thinks that a good SD card vs a bad one in Zdoom is not gonna do anything he thinks its most likely a setting difference between us somewhere the reason being is Zdoom doesnt use i/o writes so wads can easy be played from memory so yeah getting kinda scared now because i rly want to play these mods if its not the card then what could it be..
We already tried changing to the same settings as you that didnt work..
The ini seemed fine
We both running stock
You sure there is nothing that enabled it somewhere or installed for Zdoom to run better?
But also what do you call lag?
In valient outside it seemed like it was running at like 12 fps so kinda jerky laggy but very unplayable at 1024 resolution tho and that is what you are playing at and its like 30-60fps for you at that part?
So weird man even at the lowest setting possible its still laggy with like 10fps the weird thing is as soon as im in a building it jumps up to super smooth 60fps like... -
@retrofreak89 its probably 60fps outside for me. I will send you my zdoom.ini for you to test. Another thing you might try is remove your fan. That is the last hardware you can rule out. I do use a vga adapter on a 1024x768 sd tv and in the /boot/config.txt i have it set to
hdmi_group=2 hdmi_mode=16
-
@retrofreak89 please read my last post. also here is my zdoom.ini located in /opt/retropie/configs/ports/doom/
