Xbox 360 Wireless Controllers Problem

I am trying to hook up my xbox 360 wireless controllers to retropie/kodi but having a number of difficulties. First time I hooked it up, I managed to get one working, but the second one didn't work.
Then neither worked.
I have plugged in to the usb my wireless sensor adaptor thingy and when I press the button on both the joypad and the receiver to link them both up, nothing seems to happen.Any advice?
