C64 configuration issues

Yes, every time I start a game, I have no joystick controls, have to go in, and set either port 1 or 2 to use a joystick (they're both always set to none), and then map the buttons for the appropriate joystick. Some games want port 1, others want port 2. I'd like all games to default to one port, and the settings to hold for all games.
-
I'm not sure that there is anything to be done about altering at which port the games expect to find a controller, but the emulator should be saving you're mapping preferences. I can't really look at it tonight, but I'll see if anything stands out tomorrow. In the mean time, are you sure it doesn't require you to manually save the configuration somewhere in the emulator's gui after you map the controls? If memory serves, that's what I had to do with my C64 emulator on the Wii.

hey i dont mean to jump on your thread but i am having issues with mapping and the 8bitdo once you map one key it maps them all, was working great with my 360 controller not my new fc30 pro .... any help really appreciated it the last system in my setup not working !!

This is happening to you in the C64 emulator as well?
-
Hi yes i have a mapping issue not sure if its the same as the previous guy my values do save, I map one key and all the buttons get mapped to the same thing i was thinking i need to manually edit the VJM file but after staring at it a few days I don't really follow the format and how it relates to the button values...

I manually mapped my N64 buttons by looking at the button names when mapping them in the process and making a drawing of the button names as they're laid out in my controller, then I went into the config file for the N64 emulator and edited accordingly. Once I was done, I made my own backup of that file so I can easily restore it whenever it gets overwritten, I really don't care about any other controllers being added to that file, I only intend to use N64 style controllers with my N64 emulator.
If anyone wants to speak further to an issue of all buttons being mapped to the same thing, please start a new thread, I'm looking for feedback here about C64 requiring me to go into the setup menu with F12 and configuring the joystick from there every time I start a game, even if I've already previously played that game. Is this not normal?

Just so that we can eliminate the obvious, have you done what is said to be required in the RetroPie wiki for this emulator?
SAVING CONFIGURATIONS:
Go into
-settings management
-save settings on exit
-save current settings
-save hotkeys
-save joystick mapTaken from:

Ah, thanks. The lack of consistency in retropie is really throwing me off. I have the N64 overwriting my custom settings anytime I do something, and C64 picking up nothing on it's own. This kinda reminds me of that mad tv sketch with the iRack, where he's just throwing a bunch of things into a rack. Anyways, I think I'm good enough here, although it sucks that some roms want the joystick on the 2nd port. I really don't understand that, when I used a real C64 I never had to move the joystick between 2 ports, it just worked, but the roms I load on the emulator seem to be inconsistent, some want it on port 1, some on port 2. I mean, it's easy enough to swap, there's even an option in the menu for it, but like, if my nephew wants to play games, I'd like to be able to hand him a joystick and say have at it, without complicated menu navigation between games.
Is nothing simple in this?
Isn't the goal of this to setup a simple device that just does everything you want?
I don't seem to see that goal in sight with this system.

@Gators you realise this is an opensource project provided for free by developers in their free time right? The fact that it runs as many systems as it does is nothing short of amazing.
If you're looking for simplicity perhaps you may have better luck with recalbox.
-
Honest question, what are the pros/cons of recalbox vs. retropie?
-
@mediamogul Um, what? Hey, you seem to be rather helpful here, hope you can help me out with my SNES controllers.

Ah, ok, a positive message :) (google is my friend) (and now I wait 2 minutes to post this.....could I get some upvotes or something to get me out of the negative? I'm trying here)
-
Games on the c64 often used different ports. People upvote constructive posts. I don't think asking is going to help (nor will complaining)
-
Well, I have to say that my experience here has been that this is a most unwelcoming place so far. I thought this was a place to ask for help, and all I've done is that, and pointed out the frustrations that exist in this for someone starting out, and everyone here just hates and votes me down. You come off as a bunch of elitist [removed].
-
@Gators that language is not wanted here. bye.
-
Look, I'm just a new user trying to figure this stuff out, and I ask questions that may seem obvious to you, and get attacked over it. Could you lighten up a bit instead of ostracizing a newbie that really is trying to figure this out here? Didn't you start somewhere?
-
I have other questions and threads I"m working on here, and I'd appreciate being able to continue that. I've even offered suggestions where I've been able to, not that I have a whole lot I can suggest yet, but I'm trying here.
-
You should have thought about that before being rude and swearing.
