Problems quitting from kodi to emulationstation
-
I am running retropie on my raspberry pi 3. I have it set up so that kodi will autostart and when I quit kodi, it will exit to emulation station. One of out every three times I do this, it doesn't seem to work - it will quit kodi and then pause for a long time and then load kodi again.
Any ideas how to make the transition a bit smoother?

@sphirst How did you do that ? I am asking because there is not a recommended way to do that. Anyway, use "kodi" to start it instead of "kodi-standalone".

Oh ok, it is a 4.0-dev new feature.
So here is the explanation why something like sphirst said can happen.
The "Exit" option in Kodi, never worked good in the Raspberry Pi, sometimes Kodi can crash when you do "Exit". This happens in every Kodi version / OS including OSMC and OpenELEC, but in this cases you can't see it because they don't have the "Exit" option, but you can enable it.
If you launch "kodi-standalone" it has a mecanism that if Kodi crashes, it starts itself again. That is what sometimes is happening to sphirst. Kodi crashes on Exit and it starts again.
If you launch it with "kodi", this does not happen, Kodi can crash on exit but it just produces a crashlog and exists. -
@Rascas I've seen this on Kodi also, but usually it does exit ok. If I switch the startup script to use Kodi, will anything else be affected? does the standalone script change any other behaviour ?

The only diferences from "kodi" to "kodi-standalone" that I know off is this crash thing, the automounting feature and something related to network shares, but I never find out what exactly, since my network shares always worked fine.
In PiPplware we always use "kodi" instead of "kodi-standalone" because of the "crash on exit bug" -
Pi Model: (3)
RetroPie Version Used: (4.0-rc2 ...3e18321)
Built From: (4.0-beta2 SD Image, then multiple binary updates to now)
USB Devices connected: (xbox360 wireless receiver)
Controller used: (bluetooth keyboard)I started having the same issue as @sphirst on exiting Kodi. I started with a clean install of 4.0-beta2 and did not notice the issue until I started booting to Kodi vs ES.
Kodi works great, but whenever I try to exit into ES, my screen freezes on the exit dialog menu. I SSH in and sudo reboot. Then Kodi lets me exit to ES just fine as many times in and out as I want until powering off my pi.
It only happens on first power up (i boot straight to Kodi since updating). I have most recent setup script and updated all installed packages from binary multiple times (another issue below). I have not noticed this issue when I boot to ES and start Kodi from ports.
"/dev/shm/runcommand.log" is also blank... assuming this only logs startup errors and not exit errors?
I have also tried updating all installed packages to see if that would help and stumbled upon the additional issue below:
(seems related? sorry for posting here if not)... Beyond the forum I have tried multiple google searches and dug through the wiki here and here to no avail.
I installed limelight before realizing my little geForce gt 610 didn't have the "horsies" to power nvidia shield to make it work. I have tried uninstalling limelight about 20 times now... Whether I try to uninstall it by itself or try to uninstall all experimental packages, it takes me straight to the "Discovering GeForce PCs" screen. I "Ctrl C" to exit then give up.
The only real reason I don't just leave limelight installed is because when I update all installed packages, I can never get through all of the updates. Once the update process gets to Limelight, it takes me back to the "Discovering GeForce PCs" screen and will not finish all updates. What can I do to look into this?
Anything I am missing or can look into?

Not tested the 4.0 beta images but it should be the same as 3.8.1 since there isn't changes in Kodi packages. On my Pis, all exit fine but sometimes it takes sometime to exit (maybe 15 seconds or more) looking like it freezed on the exit screen, so wait a little bit.
What you are telling doesn't make sense. If you do "sudo reboot" it is a system reboot, like you start the RPi for the first time, that affects Kodi in nothing.
Check or post the Kodi log for more details. For the other questions it is better to open a new topic, I don't use limelight personally. -
@Rascas Thanks for the reply.
I have let it sit frozen on the exit screen for up to 10 minutes before getting impatient and restarting. I understand what sudo reboot does... that's why I thought it peculiar that it only seems to "freeze on exit" on initial system startup and not after reboot.
After initial startup, kodi freezing on exit, sudo reboot, then back into kodi, every exit out of kodi works just fine and does not freeze.
...also why I thought I may have a larger issue going on, since I can't get limelight package to uninstall either. I will try again and check out kodi log.

@dawtyne10 Were you ever able to find a solution. I have the exact same issue as you when I exit Kodi to emulation station. I am running my roms, and I'm pretty sure therefore Kodi, from a usb rather than from the micro sd, so I've always attributed it to that. Hoping there was some kind of solution. Thanks.
