The location that I made changes is opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads

      PLAYSTATION(R)3Controller.cfg
      SonyPLAYSTATION(R)3Controller.cfg

The mapping works until I reset the retropie then reverts back to what ever the default is.
      Im currently on 3.8.1

Why not use the Retroarch settings menu to make the changes...?
Or why not just use the EmulationStation mappings, and use per-core remapping options in the Retroarch quick menu while in game?

Would help if you explained what you are trying to accomplish.

I would love for the emulationstation mapping to be mirrored during gameplay. How do I enable that? I dont really care where I need to make these changes at as long as they stick and dont revert back each time i start up the retropie
